Beginner neck turning tool

I am going to start (for the first time ever) turning some necks. Yes, I am new to BR and don't even compete yet. I am going to make some 6mm Rem and 6mm Rem AI from 7x57 Norma brass. Neck turning is foreign to me. What is a good quality for $$$ neck tooling tool. Besides the tool and the pilot, what else do I need?

Thanks, Tiny

you will need ...

You will also need an neck expander matched to your neck turning mandrel. There is a spring-back factor when brass is resized so the expander mandrel is just about .001 larger. Both the K&M and Sinclair tools have worked well for me. Wish I could justify the "Great Pumpkin"

BR school

I would love to attend that. However, I am 20 miles from the Texas border in Oklahoma. That is a mighty long drive and the wife didn't put Michigan very high on the vacation list. Come down to Texas and I'll be there.

The Pumpkin

Does it allow you to turn to the neck shoulder junction ? Same question for the K&M .

Tiny , sorry for shanghaing your post , thought you might want to know as well .

Thanks for any replies , Jim Brown

Go Pumpkin

This is my 1st year shooting 100/200 benchrest. I just got Don Nielson's complete neck turning system. Don doesn't produce anything that isn't of the highest quality. His neck turning tools are the finest available and worth every penny.

I've got a couple K&M's and they're good tools. An expander, and something to measure the turned necks with to see that they're the thickness you want. Either a tubing micrometer, to measure the thickness directly or a micrometer to measure the overall diameter of the turned neck with a bullet seated. With care and a good tool the necks should all come out ±0.0001".

Be prepared to use up a case or three getting things adjusted too.

????

Ok, I have to show my ignorance here... expander? I am necking down from a 7 to a 6 mm. What do you mean expander?

I'm a newbie to neck turning as well and hoping I'll run into some guys at Mill Creek Rifle club in Kansas.
I'm going to have to watch the schedule and see when the BR shoot is. Currently I'm playing around with a Gracey neck shaver but I'm not where I want to be yet, could be I'm not doing things right.

Hey where do I get a exander manderal combination to match the pilot on the turner I have?

I've got a Sinclair that does a fine job. That said, it does have some quirks that would probably drive a neckturning newbie crazy. I'm used to it's little idiosyncracies and have just short of a bazillion mandrels I've made up for it, so I'm not going to pitch it and start over.

For someone new to neck turning, a K&M would be my recommendation. I've seen the Pumpkin turner..first class.

A suggestion...

Buy the best, and only cry once. Pumpkin's turners are The Best.

For #2, I'd likely go with K&M, but only if you can get the carbide mandrels that Ron Hoehn was selling a coupla years ago... They rock, and you can chuck them in a drill and swing the turner if you want.

Call Ken at K&M he's a fine man and will set you up with what you need.
