I have shot and hunted my whole life, and just started hearing about competition shooting, and F-Class sounds the most appealing to me. I am 20 years old and working off of a limited budget, but can anyone offer some advice on where to get started with equipment? Also, are there any shooting clinics that anyone knows of that are relatively inexpensive?

Thanks

I would shop for used custom instead of factory stuff but I keep hearing reports of the newer Savage stuff being competitive right out the box..... I can't see how this is possible but folks keep saying it.

I would shop carefully right here on this website, also Shooters Corner (listed in the list on the home page)

Ask lots of questions and definitely post your questions right here.
My advice is DO NOT BUY until you've had your choice validated by known winning shooters.

Savage Rifles

Buy a Savage BVSS model, Glass bed it and add a scope. Out of the box it will stay up with the customs. If you find that you like F-class, than you can build off that action when your barrel burns off. When i started shooting IBS 600yd benchrest matches i did'nt have much money so i took a FP110 savage .308 tactical that i burned the barrel off and had a kreiger barrel put on and chambered for 6.5 x 284 along with a masterclass stock. The gunsmith asked if i wanted it trued or blue printed, I told him no. That gun has seen alot of 1" to 2" groups at 600yd matches. I'm still shooting it today and it's winning matches. When i use to shoot factory class at Bridgeville D.E. 600yd matches, i bought a Savage 300WSM and worked up a load using 178gr amax, It would hold 2" to 3" groups on all 4 targets. So yes Savage is a good place to start.

Reloading

Don't forget you'll need to start reloading if you wish to be competitive.

At our local club 1000 yard match yesterday, 2 out of the top 3 finishers were shooting savage actions, one that was modified, and a savage f/tr 6.5-.284 that shot very good. As Al says, I would shop for custom stuff, but that is experience talking, in my opinion, you will just be getting your feet wet with factory rigs and eventually go with a custom set up. The only way is do research, ask more questions, make a decision and jump in, don't look back. Good luck, Ron Tilley

newby

I am also new and would like to know about the Savage 12fv in .308. I just bought one and will be shooting it out to about 500yrds. Just wanting to know how well they shoot and for a beginner is this a good choice?

Thanks in advance for the replies.

the Williamsport, PA club may be planning another weekend 1000yd clinic in the spring .... and those Savages have been showing up and seem to do well at 600 (1.1"group) & 1000yd right out of the box
