Bausch & Lomb Scope Mount, how to attach the scope ??

Just acquired a nice rifle with a B&L 2.5-8X scope in B&L mounts. Took it apart and cleaned everything up and now I can't figure out how to reattach the scope to the in place mounts AND leave things loose enough to recenter/level the cross hair. Hopefully someone's got experience with doing this and can explain it to me. Gotta be simple as they used to advertise this setup as being great and economicle because you could just lift the scope up from one set of mounts and snap it into place on another set on a different rifle. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Tried searching the net for B&L particulars but all I find is scope's for sale.
Thanks, Bill B.

With the "plunger" type rings you place the spring loaded plunger into the mount and compress the plunger stem so you can slip the other end under the lip that holds it in place. With the "leaf spring" rings, loosen the star nut until it's only engaging 2 or 3 threads, slip the front of the spring under the front bar and pull the scope back so the rear of the spring slips under the lip. Loosen the screws in the rings that hold the scope in place and level the reticle before you tighten the star nut all the way.

These old B&L mounts are super strong but heavy, and elevation/windage adjustments are trial and error. Despite this, I still use them--the original Balvar 8 scopes were (are) great; the 8As not quite as good.

The mount is the plunger type. It just doesn't seem to go in far enough to let me slip the the square end under the front bar. I'll keep trying and let you know. What are the two small screws for ? The one on the side of the plunger houseing, and the other underneath the front square end. The front one is inaccessable once the scope's mounted. The mounts are in mint condition so I'm hopeing to work this out. Thank you for the reply.

It sounds like it was together when you got it??? So it should go back on. They are usually not that tight a fit if you have the correct mount/rings for your rifle. Hopefully, someone didn't "mix and match."

The screw on the front (underneath) of the plunger rings is a tension adjustment to ensure a tight fit. Not sure about the one on the side--maybe if you remove that one the plunger stem and spring can be removed?

Gott'er done ! The sticky wicket was the plunger. Put a little bit of penetrateing oil on it and worked it in and out a number of times untill it was going through it's full range, put it in the mounts and the scope snapped it quite nicely. I loosened the scope tube screws just enough to turn the scope and was able to square up the cross hair with out a problem. Bore sighted it and now it's time to load up a few rounds and see how she shoots. I realy appreciate your help.
You're right about it being together when I bought it. Not being that familiar with the scope mounting I removed it by just loosening the tube screws and the lower half of the ring/plunger assembly just dropped right off. It was after cleaning things up that I saw the mounts were in mint condition. I think this beauty just sat in a rifle rack gathering dust for many a year. There wasn't any trace of copper fouling on the cleaning patches I pushed through, just dirt/dust. Once again, thank you much.

It's a Model-70 Winchester, made in 1947. Clean as a whistle, after I cleaned off the dust and grime.
