Basics for .22 rimfire benchrest ?

I am new on board and have never shot benchrest except in very informal practice. Is there a place I can go or a book I can buy that will give me the basics of .22 rimfire benchrest ? Equipment, course of fire, degree of accuracy needed etc. I will be shooting some iron sights and some with scopes. Thank you. David Lee Valdina

Hoke Kerns article

When I started almost 5 years ago I susubscribed to Precision Shooting and Hoke Kerns wrote 2 articles How to shoot rimfire benchrest I think was the name of it...which I found helpful.

Hoke is on the forum here maybe you could get a copy of the articles. He did a great job with them.

Other than that.....just poke around here and you can find all kind of info.

It would be wonderful if a .22 RF benchrest book could be compiled such as the Precision Shooting "Benchrest Shooting Primer". This book is primarily aimed at the centerfire benchrest disciplines, but there is a great deal of info useful to the .22 RF shooter.

Aside from that, if you can possibly get to some matches for each of the organizations, you will get a quick education about the course of fire, the targets, scoring, equipment etc.; and the folks at the matches will be happy to answer your questions.

If you have particular questions, feel free to send me a PM and I'll answer the best I can, or point you to someone who can.

Best,
Michael

David, Take Mike up on his offer. He is a real nice guy. Try an go to a match that Mike is shooting in. You will learn a lot from being there.

Call to Hoke Kerns....

Hello, come in, are you there ? If you do pick up on my cry for help, and if at all possible, I would love to get copies of the articles you wrote on how to shoot rimfire benchrest. I will also try going to Precision Shooting to see if I can get back copies and will enter a new subscription. My e-mail is:

Follow up message...

After writing my last post, I called Precision Shooting on the Saturday morning and got the editor. I can get copies of Mr. Kern's articles, I will subscribe and will also buy a book, The Benchrest Primer. Calling on Monday to get this all done. I will be on my way. Thanks everyone.

Hey David,

If at all possible get yourself to a couple of matches. I'm a "reader" too ... but you'll get a much better appreciation by attending a match than you will in any books. Sides you'll get to meet the people that you will be shooting with .... which is a major part of what it's all about.

Dave,

Come springtime there will be matches held in Holbrook, MA (less than an hours drive from the Borne Bridge off of Rte. 24), and I haven't heard anything to the contrary yet, but also in Harvard, MA (a little over an hour from the bridge up Rte. 495), plus, if you feel like driving a few more miles you are more than welcome to join us at Pinnacle Mountain in Lyndeborough, NH (±2 hours from the bridge up Rte. 495 to Rte. 3N). What these matches will give you is not only an opportunity to view some of the finest equipment being used today, but also you will be able to see first-hand what shooting IR 50/50 Unlimited (Holbrook), ARA (Harvard) and IR 50/50 3-Gun (Pinnacle) are all about, plus at Holbrook and Pinnacle Mountain we have added AirGun Benchrest to our schedules, which is a brand new discipline as of this year.

For more information as to the dates and times for each club's matches you can go to their websites by clicking on the Benchrest Central Home page at the top of this page, then clicking on the individual disciplines of interests site, then click on Schedule to view each club's match schedule.

I hope you will be able to make it to at least one of these matches.

David,

Go to the home page here and click on the icon logos for each organization. You'll find rules and schedules there. You'll need a rifle that will group 1/4" at fifty yards. Most guys use 36 power scopes. DON'T buy anything until you have attended a couple matches. Take any offers to attend a match. Take any offers of equipment to use at that match.

There is a big match in Jacksonville the first weekend in April. If you haven't gone north yet, it is a good one to attend. You will learn maore there in three days than you will in a month of reading.

Good luck,

Ken Henderson

check out the classified ads here to get an idea of prices and what's available. And welcome........

Thanks...

...for recommending the basics I wrote for Precision Shooting. Hopefully they'll be helpful. They'll be dispatched as soon as I receive his snail mail address. H.

David,
My name is Paul Bendix and am running the Benchrest shoots at Holbrook Sportsmens Club. I guess you live on the Cape ? If you have the time to shoot at Holbrook and want to see what rimfire benchrest is about before a match let me know. I can set you up with a couple of guns and several different rests to try. Our outdoor matches won't start until the end of April and I can set you up with a gun, rest and ammo to use at a match.
We do have indoor matches at 25 yards and will be running air rifle benchrest matches as soon as I get my new toy.
Send me an email at pbendix@comcast.net and let me know what day you would like to shoot.
Mistermike and Dave Shattuck will be shooting at Holbrook also.

Not to hi-jack this tread. BigMac can you give me any info on match's close to NYC, I'd like to drive up or out, and check some out.

I read this site to gain insights into what you guys, who are the dedicated br rimfire shooters, are doing, using, etc. Now, Dave initiated this thread with a simple request about equipment,ie, guns, barrels, ammo, rests etc. and no one has given him anything specific beyond "go to a match" or "get a magazine". Why not help him out? Me too!
Bob

Hello Bob

One of the reasons the other guys have recommended going to a match is because there are quite a few different options and opinions to choose from. All of us have our own personal perference and many different combinations work. Alot of the items a shooter may determine that he wants is also based on which sport or sports you plan on shooting. Each organizations has their rules posted on the home page of this forum an you can get a good idea of the way matches are run but being at a match is by far the best method for seeing the correct equipment for each sport in use.
There are also a lot of pictures posted on the forum of different events from the pass couple years.

I personally like Hart Barrels, although I have used many different ones, Hall Actions, Jewell triggers and Leupold scopes. Stocks by Bill Myers, D & B and McMillian have served me for years. Rear Bags by Jim Jackson. front rest by Sinclair, farley and Mag research. One piece rest by Randy Legar. Ammo from Bob Collins and the list goes on..........and on....:):)

Bob, a lot of folks come on here and ask the same questions. It is easier to refer them to to resources where they can research for themselves than to write a lengthy reply.

And the last time I checked, no one here is required to "give" you guys anything. So if you come in here looking for free advice that has taken literally decades to aquire, show some respect. GG

Bob,

Re-read David's post. He is looking for where to go for basic information. Several guys have given him that. KingSnake hit it on the head, there are too many variables and games to be very specific. Besides, there are any amount of good guns, smiths and associated equipment out there that are more than adequate. Go to a match, any match, and you will find rimfire benchresters are extemely helpful. Doesn't mater which game they shoot, but, the equipment will vary to some degree.

Hi Bob,

I understand your frustration. But those that came before my post have said it very well. The answer is there, it just takes a little effort to find it. You will find as many differing opinions as there are members of this board. Just an example, I read King Snakes equipment list, I use some of his choices but not all. Guess what, we both shoot reasonably well considering. As to David’s original question it was very broad and it would take a book to give him all the options available. I know that several match directors from the New England area have been in contact with him with invites when he gets back from Florida. I spent close to an hour on the phone with him. We had a very pleasant conversation. I hope I helped a bit. I notice you do not list your location in your profile so I have no way of knowing what clubs are near you. To repeat what someone said in an earlier post...go to Bench Rest Central’s home page, click on the different RFBR organizations and see what ranges might be near you. Go visit and learn.

Take care, Al

Happy with all the help given me...

Hi all, I am very happy with the friendly help that I have received, both on this forum and through it, via e-mail and phone calls. I have entered a subscription to Precision Shooting, purchased from them a book, "The Bench Rest Primer", Holk is sending me copies of his two introductory articles on the sport and I have invites to a bunch of clubs for shoots.

Now, subject to my mind changing between now and then, which it probably will, I have a Remington 513T at my daughter's house in Arizona and will be out to see her and the grandkids in April. I will drop off a lesser rifle to take it's place and bring it back to Cape Cod. I think it weighs 9 pounds. I have a friend who is a gunsmith and will have him crown the barrel and maybe lighten the trigger. A Weaver 36x 1/8 dot scope weighs about a pound, so I think I can get this set up at under 10.5 pounds and start practicing with wind flags. We have no shortage of wind at the Cape. I also have an Anschutz model 64 that has always shot well for me, and just before coming down to Florida took off the iron sights and put on a 6-20x Leupold. I will try that also and one of them may do me, at least as a starter.

So, thank you one and all for the help. I have been made to feel welcome.

David V- Cape Cod

Get ahold of your neighbors John or Teddy. They probably shoot BR frequently as they support shooting and John for sure probably attends matches.
