I received a new Bartlein BBL today and upon inspection I found some noticeably deep scratches, deep enough to hang a thumbnail in on the exterior. Are these deep scratces normal for a new blank?
Thanks, Floyd

NO.

Mark on exterior of barrel the flaw locations, and photograph, send back to Bartlein with a polite explanation of the problems........Don

I purchased 4 -7mm barrels from Bartlien and one of the four was the same way, it looked like it missed the final grind cycle at the profiling stage.
I just buffed it up with 180 then bead blasted it and it looked ok but the funny thing is the bore also had a little more copper fouling during break in??

We took some pictures of the barrel. Having trouble down loading them right now but here is what is up.

The barrel or barrels you get from us are already polished to a 320 grit finish. This is done before the barrel goes to reaming and rifling and lapping etc.... So it has to go in and out of a couple more machines before it is totally finished.

Yes they do at times get marked up some. This is usually not a big thing as the gunsmith who is installing it still has to put the barrel into his lathe etc....to do the threading, chambering and crowning etc...the last thing you do is the final polish before installing the barrel.

When I fit my barrels the last thing I do (if I'm leaving it as a polished type finish) is to go over with some 320 to 600 grit again and a scotch brite pad. This usually will leave a nice looking finish on the outside of the barrel.

It doesn't make sense for us to put a mirror type finish on the outside of the barrel because it still needs the final gunsmithing work to be done and to one extent or another the barrel will get bead blasted, cerakote finish or blued finish etc....

Bartlein Barrels

one thing i noticed about the Bartlein barrels i've chambered is that their bores are very very straight. and that i think is important:):):)

all the outside does is to hold a mirage shield.

polish your brass after every agg, now that is important:cool::cool:

I was told that you should be careful only to polish the body & neck of the case. Polishing the base is liable to leave abrasive in the headstamp & can also cause headspace (or was that headroom).

The Bartlein barrels I get have a few scratches on the outside. I put more on them doing the chamber work. It only takes a few minutes to bring the finish back to their 320 grit polish. A lot of barrels from other makers look pretty good when you unpack them but then hit them with some 320 grit paper and you uncover some very course grit polishing marks. Then I have to back up and start with 180 grit and work my way back.

No complaints on my end about any barrel maker's polishing job. While it's nice to have a highly polished exterior, I'm paying for and interested in the interior work.

I'll bet many of us remember the days when they were nothing but rough turned.

What in the world will polishing your brass accomplish?
Butch

the US National Bureau of Stuff has definitely proved that polished brass will aid accuracy as much as polishing the outside of a barrel without the detriment of polluted carbon footprints:mad::mad: otherwise why buy a crazy cloth:confused::confused:

In some rare cases a critical dimension will get ground when you got to hold say a .001 tolerance. I don't know of a single barrel maker that grinds the hole outside contour of the barrel. I don't think anyone would want to pay the cost for this type of machine work when not necessary.
