barrel temp

Seems that my first shot is always a flyaway. After that, as I keep shooting, the accuracy gets better. And sometimes when the barrel is too hot to touch, I get my best shots. After reading alot, I see where people are saying to cool the barrel down etc. Also, I try and clean the barrel after, about 20 shots, but I don't know it that helps the accuracy or not. Anyway, I have a Rem 700, .308 that I have glass bedded the action. It has made a huge difference.........in a positive way; but I still don't get the barrel temp. Is this something that is just different from gun to gun? And do some guns like a dirty barrel?

I don't get to shoot that much as I am out of the usa and only get back a few times a year. But I am curious to know if shooting with a super hot barrel is normal or will it damage the gun?

Shooting with a hot barrel will shorten it's life somewhat. If you are going to fire in normal competition you will probably have to shoot with a hot barrel in each match. You will be firing at a rate of 1 or 2 shots per minute which doesn't allow enough time for cooling. You will have to determine by watching accuracy, just how often you have to clean your particular gun.
