Barrel symbol

A fellow member of the Gallatin Gun Club (Gallatin TN) makes at least a part of his living buying and selling guns from estates. He usually has several auctions running on GB. He called the other night about one he thought I'd have some interest in. It seems to have been built in the 80's by a local well-respected smith named Harry Crieghton. He described it as a wood benchrest stock with a sleeved single shot Remington action (could be an XP), and a .224, 21" barrel. Also, it seems to have a magnum boltface. Sadly, he did not get brass or dies with it yet, although I've encouraged him to go back and try to get one or the other.

There is a stamp on the barrel that reads, 224DQN♠. Has anyone seen anything like this? Is it from the barrel maker or possibly someting Harry did? Any help would be appreciated. I hope to see the rifle Mon. or Tues.

Vickie,
Thanks for the reply. Looks like the symbols would match the chambering. And the .225 rimmed case might just fit the bolt face we're looking at. It does give us a place to start if we can't locate the brass or dies.

Thanks again,
Richard

If it is the .225 Winchester case, the barrel will tell you. Pull the barrel off and look at the chamber. A rimmed chamber Very easily identified

David,
My first suggestion to the owner was to pull the barrel and do a chamber cast. He was reluctant to do anything to the rifle at all and having never done it, he has no clue how easy it is to remove the barrel. Now that we have a pretty good idea what we're looking for, I can probably look through from the rear and see the rim cut. Also, we do have access to a bore scope. We should get it nailed down shortly. Thanks for your suggestion,

Rick

Rick,
I worked with Harry way back when. The marking you write about does not sound like one of his. I can i.d. his work. Call me if you want. Or make a few pictures of the rifle and barrel markings and send them to me.

If it's on the .225 Win case the bolt should take an '06 or .308 case since the .225 uses a 0.473" rim. If it's a Wasp or something similar the bolt should take a .30-30 case or be larger than 0.510".
