as alot of you already know, i'm preparing to build a long range hunting rifle... mcmillan a-3 stock, model 70 action, in either 6.5x284 or 300 rem ultra mag... i'm looking for barrel recomendations. make and barrel length... weight is not really an issue, will be using it on power and gas line right of ways, can drive the atv up to the shooting house door... lol... stock is cut for #7 douglas barrel contour.. any help will be appreciated..

Thanks Marc

I have no experience with 300 RUM but a lot with 6.5-284; both competition and hunting. In a hunting rifle, you don't need more than 25-26". If you really won't have to carry it much, go ahead and get a #7 contour. Heaviest I have built in a hunting rig is #5. Unless you have elk on the menu, forget the 300 RUM, it is expensive to shoot and tons of recoil.

My most recent 6.5 barrel is a Shilen ratchet rifle in 8 twist. I prefer 8.5 twist but Shilen doesn't make that. 8 twist is good too. I have also had good luck with 6.5mm Schneider barrels. When you are talking hunting rifles, it is real easy to overthink the barrel thing. All these recognized name barrel makers turn out excellent barrels. There is no need to worry about shooting in the .2s instead of the .3s with a hunting rifle.

See, those of us in the in-crowd know there is only one barrel that will shoot. But the manufacturer cannot supply everybody. In fact, supplies are quite limited. What to do? Even though there are enough barrels for the roughly 3,000 benchrest shooters in the U.S., if we all bought one & listed it in our equipment reports, then everybody would want one, and there wouldn't be enough available for us benchrest shooters.

So, what we have to do is to draw lots to see whose going to have to buy another brand of barrel for the next year or so. The published match report are accurate, what isn't shown is that we have to work ever so hard to keep our secret. If it's deception, at least it's honest.

If you shoot long enough and well enough, you'll be contacted. All I can say.

i have contacted my friends at homeland security (they train at our range frequently so i am almost qualified to consider myself one of 'the boys'). they will be calling on you shortly. they have ways of extracting this kind of information. i'm sorry to have to be the one to tell you this.
