Barrel opinions

I have a few LW standard rifling barrels that I have been using on my rifle. They both seem to perform equally.

The thing that I have noticed is that they lose some accuracy after about 15-20 shots......and it comes back after cleaning and maybe 5-6 sighters.

The barrels are 23.25" long. The first 4 inches that go into my breech block are turned down to .5625 from .630. This has created a loose condition in the first 4 inches. Basically, it's like having a double choked barrel. One shortly after the breech, and one at the muzzle.

This is evident when pushing a lubed pellet through the barrel.

Right now the barrels are rather pellet picky. I roll sort to find the ones it likes.....which seem to be about 60% of a tin.

The barrels shoot pretty well. I have been averaging a touch over 249, and 12x with them over the last 40 targets. About 23% of the last 40 have been 250's, and my best x count is 18. I don't have a rest.....so i shoot off 2 bags.

I have considered cutting the first 4 inches of loose barrel off and running the shorter barrel. My barrel block design is like the Mac1......so as long as I ream the block to .630, I can run the barrels uncut. I did not do this originally because i did not have a .630 reamer or a boring bar that was long enough to make it through the whole barrel block......and I didn't think the barrel would open up that much.

I only use the barrels in this length because I can run a pretty low reg pressure (1100) and use up more air in my reservoir. I get about 240-250 shots on the regulator at this pressure......so it really won't bother me to lose some.

My question is......do you think this double choke could be causing some issues?

Is there anything to be gained or lost by shortening the barrels? (besides velocity)

I'm hesitating to cut them down because it seems to be doing pretty well as it is.....but maybe it could be better. I don't know.

I really wonder if I could do any better with a front rest, too.

Anything that changes the bore can cause a barrel to have issues. However, if your barrel is averaging over 249, hard to argue with the results.
