Barrel length and shape

I am going to have a new barrel put on my Anschutz 64 mpr. I was wondering is longer better? I know a shorter barrel loses accuracy when you take away much of the length, ie: pistol vs rifle, but is going from 22 to say 26 inches going to make a difference? Is there a restriction of length for RBA and ARA guns for those are the matches I shoot. I understand I don't want to turn my 9 pound gun into an unlimited but I'm sure I can add a few inches before going unlimited. Also one more question, I would like to keep the an Anschutz bulge at the end of my barrel because my custom stock fits very close and I don't want to have to buy a new tuner for my new barrel. Will the barrel makers be able to mill a barrel with that bulge and sight slices if that's what there called. Thanks for any help guys. By the way I'm new here and I've read a lot of the post on this sight. There seems to be plenty of smart asses on this forum. I know I could google, call the barrel makers, read a book, meditate.... but I didn't I'm asking some of you kind knowledgeable folks for your input, so if you have some smart ass comment how about keeping it to yourself.

i don't think 4 extra inches would be adding to much wieght. i know a.r.a. is unlimited. if you can drag it to the bench you can shoot it. i'd say a barrel maker would not have a problem making you a barrel with the annie knot on the end of it. how big is the dia. of the knot on your barrel? you could get a barrel that is a striaght barrel of that dia. if you want to go that way. there is no way of knowing where the crown is going to be on a new barrel before slugging it and finding the choke where the crown goes. it could be right in the annie knot on a new barrel or right behind it. i believe most blanks are 28 inches long at start. you may have to cut off up to 6 inches in some cases.

i'm not a smith, but i've been reading and learning alot here lately by listening to a guy i know who does great work on rimfires. i'm sure somebody with more hands on will come give you some more and better information than i could.

most people on here are good guys. it's winter time and the normal for this site in the down monthes is bitching and moaning. to bad there isn't more indoor places to shoot around the country. that would keep the hum drum down a bit, and people more on the task of rimfire shooting.

Thanks Mr Nobody, I didn't even think about the crown. I want to keep the bulge and can't go with a barrel as fat as the bulge I have now without altering my custom stock. So if you you had your way would you prefer a barrel as long as you could make it or do you think a few inches doesn't make a difference.

Big Shurl,

Length is irrelevant (thats what some fellers say anyway). Anything greater than 16 inches should be sufficient to burn the small amount of powder in a .22 LR cartridge.
Let your gunsmith slug the barrel and find the tightest roundest spot, that is where the new barrel should be cut.

A shorter barrel only loses accuracy when you are dealing with a sight plane on iron sights, with a scope that doesn't really come into play. Ara has no restriction on barrel length.

As for your preexisting tuner, it will be very difficult to find a new barrel the same overall diameter as the end of an Anshutz barrel. You may have to shim or buy a new tuner.

Hope this helps,

big shurl, the info for a shorter barrel is flat out wrong, look to the sporters. those rifles are generally 23" to 24.75" long, with a reverse taper. the most difficult barrels to tune are little or no taper. the easiest are those that exceed 25" and taper to .750 there is no reason a competent smith cannot cut a reverse taper to your existing tuner diameter. any barrel that I put on any rifle bench or 3 posistion will follow what the sporter bench shooters are doing now, they are way ahead of the 10.5 and unlimited builders.

Short and stiff

I have just changed barrels to a sort of short fat barrel on my 40X. It is 21 inches long and It shoots better than the two that I have used in the past. At the range the other day I shot a 250 16X with it. In my shop I shot a 250 21X.

I have only shot three targets in my shop and they have been 249, 249, and 250, all with a high X count. Now, I have to find some more good ammo soon.

Bill, that's great shooting. big difference between a 16" barrel and 21" barrel. watch the scores, records will continue to fall and for a reason.

Looks like you now have found a good combination and are shooting much better. Are you still forecasting good weather for Dec. 5th ?.

Jim, You were not supposed to read that post. It was going to be a surprise for you. What was I thinking.

San Angelo will hold our last 50/50 shoot of the year on the first Saturday of the month, December 5, and the weather will be in the 60s the skies will be clear and the winds will be gentle and steady. Jim, you might pass the word since this is the last sanctioned 50/50 shoot in Texas this year. We are looking forward to seeing you.

Note: There is a saying around here that only newcomers and fools predict the weather. That means that it is OK for you and me to predict weather.:)

Bill, what for a barrel and tuner did you use. thanks martin

Martin,
The barrel is a Shillin 4 grove ratchet. The tuner is one that I bought three years ago from Ron Hoehn. I had to have it fitted to the new barrel.

I will share another secret that may not mean a thing. I used a stethoscope on the flat part of the stock and taped on the barrel with an allen wrench while I turned the tuner. It reached a point where it would not ring but only made a dull thud and I stopped. The thing shot good so I just left it there.

This may be science or maybe just luck. It seems to work.

Look, I understand that there are some great shooting rifles with longer barrels and there may be some with even shorter barrels.

Concho Bill.

Bill,

That gives me something to think about with regards to Bill Calfee's methods. I'd always wondered whether Bill's smallbore tuning was maybe a function of loading the barrel until it went thru some form of elastic epiphany or some other such metamorphis.

Maybe everybody should out their stethascopes & tap away. Wouldn't it be a hoot if all Bill's guns gave the same result?

John

there is more and more evidence that just placing a tuner on a barrel makes it more accurate. statements as such just reinforces that. again it may not be what shooters want to hear but that's the way it is.
