I have a friend with a barrel that he wants engraved. There is a local machine shop that will do it for mega bucks, but I thought I might help him out with a post here.
It's a long barrel, 30", and he wants to have it blackened (416 SS) after it is engraved with the caliber and 'smith, etc. He is thinking of gun-kote for the finish and needs to have the engraving deep enough so that it shows after it is finished.
This is a rifle that he is building (his first) and will be more for show than go, not that (hopefully) it won't shoot well. He is an exquisite craftsman and this rifle is absolutely gorgeous. He has milled the stock out of a solid piece of aluminum, with side pieces of walnut to offset the polished metal.
Anyway, getting verbose here, what does he look for in the type of engraving, who does it, and what is the best way for the engraving to show after the barrel is finished with the gun-kote?
