Barrel Contour

Hey guys,
I am thinking about having a rifle built in an A-5 but I would like to keep it on the lighter side around 10-11lbs if possible. If I go with a lighter barrel with a 26" finish length what contour do you prefer when comparing a sendero type contour to a palma contour? Are there any advantages to either of those contours?
Thanks in advance

If your talking the McMillan A-5 stock either contour will certainly fit however this particular stock is more intended for a heavy varmint style contour. It will work but you may not be satisfied with the overall look of the rifle when its completed.

A Medium palma is often described as a "heavy" #7 contour so that would be my choice probably.

Hope this helped.

Cheers,

Chad

Chad,
Thank you for the input. I have an A-5 right now and an old roasted sendero barrel I was playing with and I think I could handle the looks of a barrel that size. Any smaller I think would definitely look a little funny!
Thank you,
Al

As long as you order the A-5 stock to fit the sendero taper barrel or fill the barrel channel to match the taper if you don't like the clearance on the free float, it won't look funny. A sendero taper barrel works well in McMillan's Remington varmint stock and makes a nice handling rifle.

Just for comparison, one of my Rifles with an A5 weighs 15 Lbs. It has a fluted LV #8 Bartlien (#18 Krieger is the same thing) on it, Leupold Mk4 8.5x25x50 with a Steel Base and Steel Rings, Surgeon DBM and Harris type "S" BR Bipod. The #18 is listed at 6.5Lbs @ 28", this rifle is finished @ 26".

You'd have to knock 4 lbs off to be at your max target weight. The Rem. Varmint is listed at 4.5 lbs @ 26". Use a lighter scope than what I listed, flute the barrel, cut it to 24", use a BDL or ADL type internal box magazine and use light weight Tally Rings. That’s probably the best you can do in the weight reduction area. You might be at 10-11 Lbs all up.

The wider forearm looks better with a larger barrel in it but, I've built them both ways and they look fine.
