Barrel cleaning interval

Hello everybody,

I was wondering what the best interval is inbetween cleaning sessions for a rimfire barrel.
Do you clean after every session, after 100 or 250 rounds or even more?Anschütz advises after 500 shots but that seems a lot.An experienced shooter at my club adviced always shooting from a clean barrel,so cleaning after every session. Is he right?

This post isn't about which brand or type of cleaner, there is enough info about that.(BTW I use shooter's choice lead remover and might change to bore tech)But searching on an interval not much is found.

It's more fun shooting than cleaning but it has to be done. But I don't like to do useless work.So any ideas folks?

Thanks a lot,
Pieter

I learned early on that it depends on temperature. My first ever indoor benchrest shoot, with temp about 55 F I shot the first three cards without cleaning. Everyone else was running patches through the bore after every card. I shot 2000+ scores for the first two cards then the third was a disappointing 1600. I cleaned the barrel after that third card by running 3 or 4 dry patches through the bore. Next card was 2300. Did it again and last card was a 2250. Not enough to win anything but I learned a valuable lesson. I run a few dry patches after EVERY card, no exceptions. Some use solvent some use a brush between cards. Experiment and see what works best in your rifles. bob finger

I usually put one wet and three dry patches through the barrel after each target..

I will give it a shot like that. One card is 25 shots plus testers I presume.Advantage is it will clean easier as there isn't this much grub.I'll try them both, wet and dry.

I've already noticed even a dry patch gives a high shot.

cleaning interval...

The last Anschutz I owned the recommendation was every 10,000 shots.

Actually, this is a common piece of mis-quoted information:

"The last Anschutz I owned the recommendation was every 10,000 shots."

Anschutz manuals do not state this whatsoever.

The official Anschutz manual states on page 30, Careful Cleaning:

"New rifles up to 10,000 shots in 1,000 shot intervals, subsequently is 5,000 shot intervals at least."

So,

1. Anschuts is stating that you need to clean every 1000 round for the first 10,000 rounds, at least.

2. Then every 5,000 rounds, at least.

This is the minimum cleaning regime they suggest. The bare min, not the standard, and not the max. The most basic.

Here on BR, there is really no need to convince the majority that cleaning is necessary, but it does help quite a bit to quote the factory accurately.

it works

I have been cleaning the barrel after every card now and it seems to work. It's quickly done compared to bigger intervals. She doesn't foul up much after about 30 shots.I pass one vfg with lead remover,3 or 4 dry ones, one with fp10 and then dry ones untill they come out clean(3 to 5).

I have a 2008 annie and in the manual they advise every 500 shots minimum.

Thanks for the info everyone who replied.I appreciate it.

Anschutz cleaning

It depends on what you mean by "cleaning"!

Anschutz recommend using a patch or cleaning cord, followed by an oiled patch or cord, after every "shooting". Anschutz term this "regular care".

The 5000 shot interval refers to "careful cleaning", using oil and a bronze brush, followed by dry patches or cleaning cord until the last one shows no considerable dirt.

I know that several shooters in my club do neither for months on end, but I figure that Dieter and the Anschutz crew must know a thing or two about their products by now - so I just follow the factory recommendations.

To "scrub" the bore I use the vfg green (intense) felt. They have copper wires in them.I don't like cleaning rods in my .22,it's such a tight fit.

I use a .20 cal rod with the bore guide insert sized to fit. After every 50 or so shots [ ie, one target ] I use Ballistol, couple of wet followed by a few dry.

Pieter, you are not shooting enough sighters !!!!

sighters

Really?I usually shoot 5,max.10 sighters before I start competition(indoor).Should I be doing more then?If you shoot 50 shots on a card you do 25 sighters? That seems a lot to me.

Maybe with a smaller cleaning rod it is easier, but the one I have is a tight fit.Nor do I have the bore guide. Is it the original Anschütz you use?

Outdoors I think it is pretty common to shoot a box or more of ammo for each target. Indoors is a different thing altogether.

5 to 15 shots to get the bbl settled in, and then sighters for any significant wind shift. On a breezy day the ammo goes fast.

I can agree with that.I shoot indoor and if she hits the 10 I start.Outdoor you want to feel the wind.Sadly we only have indoor ranges. To compensate we have a wobbly bench at our club:mad:

The bench set up I use in my backyard for AGBR practice is very wobbly. I think it is good for your shooting to not be developing the bad habit of laying all over the bench.

I can't even touch the bench.I have to shoot with my right arm off the bench or I can see the crosshairs move at the slightest move I make.
But that makes life easier If you shoot a match at a range with a solid bench.
