Recently I started the wonderful world of reloading. I've got a 22-250 (Rem 700) an AR15 and an assortment of .45 handguns. As I started playing with the .224" rounds I started learning about twist rate and bullet stabilization. My AR15 has a 1:9 twist which is fine for the 62Gr stuff and even the 55Gr. But my 1:12 22-250 will zing 36gr varmint grenades at 4,410FPS. Long story short, I love the AR15 for what it is, but for some special rounds built up to tight tolerances I'd like to get a 1:12 twist 223 bolt action rifle. I'm not made of money so I'm looking at the sub $1,000 offerings. I have a good albeit expensive friend that is an FFL so I can get a decent price on standard offerings.

So far my choices are Savage Varminter(not sure if this comes in 1:12?), Weatherby Vanguard, Remington 700 or Ruger 77.

If I'm in the wrong forum please point me in the right direction, if this is the place I welcome all advice.

Thanks,

Tim

I think the list just got shorter...I can get the Weatherby SMOA Stainless/Syn for $699. That's in 1:12 twist for 36gr-45gr .223.

Am I on the right track?

If you were buying a $700 rifle would you buy it in .223 just because you liked the round and already had reloading dies, brass, primers an bullets?

Also, will 60 grain bullets stabilize in a 1:12 twist? I can get a great deal on some Berger match bullets.

actually the 1/12's do well with up to 55 with 52/53 very popular.
1/14 is better for these light wieghts.
and yes the factory section if the place for this question.
maybe a monitor will move it over there.

Tim,

Pick up a standard Savage Model 12. You can find these all over for about $400 (sometimes a little bit more). The standard twist on this is 1:9. Shoot the dickens out of it, I'm sure you'll like it. I have several of these and they all shoot 40 grain VMax bullets just great. I use Rem 7 1/2 primers and H322 powder.
If you want to replace the barrel with a slower twist, you can get one from Sharp Shooters Supply, ready to screw on, for $305. http://www.sharpshootersupply.com/ If you want a nice laminated stock, you can find them on eBay for less than $100.

Tim,
You almost can't miss with what Adrian said... Spot on.
I have seen (and own) a buncha .223 Savages they SHOOT!
I tell those whom are looking for a rifle along your specs this...>
Savage VLP (varmint low profile) in .223.
Get the best glass you can afford.
Get a box of Brownells Gel glass bed compound and bed from the recoil lug back to just in front of the tang area. This is easy... Just follow the instructions to the letter.
Once the action is glass bedded over the pillers, you will be able to wring out the most accuracy the gun will offer.

Second vote on Savage

Go with a Savage - don't put so much importance on twist - not that big a deal in the long run -- Savage uses a 9 twist so you can shoot heavy 69g+ bullets - but it will work just fine in lighter bullet weights.

Do it this way

Buy the less expensive savage 12 in .223 - use money to buy a decent front and rear rest. Also buy a scope - maybe a weaver 36T - its a lot easier when you can see the bullet holes at 200 yards. I saw a thread not to long ago on here that Optic Zone had them on sale special for BR site users - search the threads to get the promo code.

When you want to upgrade the savage - Sharpshooter supply has screw on barrels in most any caliber - and on a savage you can just swap out the bolt head to fit whatever cartridge you want. So for maybe $400 you can then swap over to a 6BR or a 30BR or a 22-250 or really just about any caliber you could imagine.

Later you may want to put it in a better stock - or glass bed it.

Good source of info for savage is http://Savageshooters.com

But ....the best info you can get is at a match - many clubs shoot factory class Benchrest - go shoot in a match!! Talk and listen to these guys - you will have a blast and learn more in one day than you can in years on your own.

Where do you live? - someone close to you will help.
