Free Ballistics Software
I have a free spreadsheet version of the Pejsa ballistics program. It'll give you numbers but no printouts. Sierra Suite has a good calculator also, and you can get printouts from it. The program I use most is the Pejsa "WB" version. It, like the spreadsheet version, allows you to enter the drag factor for your bullet and it will calculate a BC for you at a given muzzle velocity. Printouts are reasonably good, as are the printed tables. I carry a printout with all my varmint rifles. After reading Pejsa's book on modern ballistics I am sold on his approach. And after putting his equations to the test with my own equipment and rifles, I can state that it works to perfection.
If you have access to two chronographs you can get the all-important drag factor for your bullet. After you have that you can do the math from the Pejsa book yourself, no software required! PS has also published several articles by Pejsa which detail his method and provide all the required equations.
All this being said, there are several web sites that have on-line ballistics calculators for anyone to use. You can try a search to see what's up and running.

depends how you use it but
I have Sierra and several of the free ones but last year I bought the NightForce (made by exbal) and put it on a Palm-like HP Pocket PC and it is the only thing I use now.
At first I was upset that it couldn't print (the PC version does) but I started using it and realized "hey, why do I need to print when I have this thing with me"! I bought a protective case I just throw it in my range bag. I really like being able to have one in the field.
