I guess I,m new to all this again . I shot alot in the 80,s but quit to shoot other stuff (shotguns) .

Last time around I shot a Remington pss IN 223 and really loved it . Well I bought a new old stock in the box Remington PSS yesterday 223 .

I found my 2oz. Jewell trigger and 24X Leupold and as soon as the weather gets alittle nice I,m on it .

I only shoot Rifles for fun and to relax I have a range in the back yard with a 50-100-and 200 yard bench . I plan to shoot alot and I do reload .

I,v been reading and most of this stuff is new to me but the fun I remember is not .

Where are you located? Let's find a match close to you so you can come out and play.

Back To my Rifle

I,m in Indiana and it,s to cold and to much snow to shoot much . I,v been working on this new Rifle . Got the trigger in(Jewell) and scope on Leupold 24X so I,m about ready . The 223 may not be the number one choice but I really like it . I also like the Remington PSS Rifles .

If the accuracy fails to meet expectations, the bedding block likely needs bedding work. Very few don't need work. It's not a hard job, but if you don't feel like doing it or don't want to take the chances on a possible glue job have a gunsmith do it.

My PSS in .223 would not shoot below MOA with any load but some Remington factory Powerlokt ammo. After 300 or so rounds I took it apart and the evidence on the action finish showed what needed done. After a coat of Acra Glas Gel on the bedding block and getting the barrel channel opened up again it shot 1/2 MOA out to 300 yards if I did my stuff and conditions weren't too ugly.

I,m in north Central Indiana . 100 miles north of Indy and 100 miles south east of Chicago . We got alittle more snow last night but it,s not real cold .

I will shoot this Rifle some when it warms up and not make any changes untill I,v shot maybe 100 rounds . I have 7 or 8 different loads from the last time I shot a 223 . Most are loaded with A 2230 and 52 gr, bullets I also like A 2015BR . I have a bunch of Remington primers in a dry box that are from about 1987 all are Rem 7.1/2 BR ( close to 30,000) . I have very little powder but not sure just what I may be useing .

I need to look at my Die,s (RCBS) they may be to old and out dateded .

Keybear,
There are matches for centerfire at Wabash Wildlife and Sportsman's Association in Wabash, IN. They also shoot informal group matches at Clark's Gun Range in Cayuga, IN.

John M. Carper

p.s. They shoot informal matches in Hillsdale, MI also. I assume your around Warsaw, IN?

Carp I have alot of work to do with this Rifle before I,m ready for any matches . First I need to shoot it a little here at home . I,m not happy with the front stock bolt (to short) . Also I need to do some work on my bench . It has set for the last 15 years and if it ever get warm it needs some TLC .

I live north of Logansport about 14 miles so Wabash is close . I,v been shooting ATA Trap for years and getting burned out . I need to relax as I had a heart attack last fall and slowing down is my plan .

I have always loved shooting Rifles and small bores (.224) is my thing . For my age (62) my eyes are very good (20/10) and do shoot alot of handgun .

But like alot of retired people I need to settle down to one thing and for now it will be Rifles .

Indiana Rifle

KEYBEAR: I live in Portage and it's about an hours drive to the Winamac
Public range for me, but it's one of the nicest ranges in Indiana. The informal
100 yd./ 200 yd. matches at the Walbash club are a lot of fun but there are
a couple of High Rollers there who like to take my money. :D I also belong
to the ASSRA and shoot at the Beeson Range near Etna Green. Young's
1,000 yd. range at Woodruff, Indiana has steel targets every 100 yds. out
to 1,000 yds. and is one of the nicest private ranges in the world. :) I used to shoot Action Pistol events, but now I only shoot rifle from a comfortable
bench. You are lucky to live in Old Fashion Gun Friendly state. :D Enjoy
your rifle shooting.

Gerry I have spent hours at the Pulaski State Park Range before the remodel . I live south of Winamac 10 miles on US 35 . I was sick and could not work from 1985 to 1990 . I was at the State Park Range about every day .

I have room for a nice 200 yard range here at home . It makes it nice if your working on loads or just playing around with different guns . It,s about 75 feet from my loading room to the 100 yard bench .

The Jasper Pulaski remodel is a joke. They paved the parking but didn't do
any thing about the bad benches or lack of overhead cover. Sounds like you
have a nice set up, but us big city folk have to drive to Winamac. I really
enjoy shooting at the 200 yd. table because there you have that section
of the range to your self and can go down range any time.
And, I enjoy meeting and talking to people and giving my shooting
magazines away. It's been over 12 weeks since I've been to Winamac and
the forcast for next Friday is looking good. Has any one been shooting
there? I have some new loads to try out and Chronograph. :D Are the
benches dry? PM me if you can.

If you have a PSS you have a pretty good rifle.
It has the HS precision stock with the aluminum bedding block.
Some people skim bed the block. I have found that not to be necessary with my PSS in 308. I am very happy with mine. It shoots half minute with good handloads.
I think your in for a good time with that rig. it's pretty close to a used benchrest rig for accuracy, the 223 case is a good choice too.
Lots of quality bullets are out there for the 224 rifles.
Cases are easy to get and right now lapua is making some really good ones.

Gerry I have a Remington PSS in 308 also . I bought it years ago and it does shoot very well . I was really surprised to read that shooters are gluing the actions in the stocks now . I did that to my PSS 308 years ago and it shot alot better . I put a trigger from a 40X in it so I can adjust it from the bottom . It has a Springfield 16X scope on it and has shot a truck load of vermin .

Keybear ' Glad to know i'm not alone with the PSS
I was waiting for a M24 Reminton Clone to be built. It took a lot longer then expected , so i had a friend who is a dealer find a new PSS for Me.
I installed blocks a new 2 oz trigger and a good leupold 36 scope.
I loaded my favorite 308 load with Sierra 150 gr bullets.
I was amazed at how well it shot, so good it shot neck and neck with the new M24 I ordered.
I let Ranger Joel shoot both Both shot the same at 200yds
a nice round half inch group. I was a happy shooter that day.

Gerry I have an older Springfield Scope on my PSS 308 it was bought new . It,s the 16X variable with ranging and you use a 168gr. bullet at 2100 fps . With this setup it is 2 inches high at 100yd. dead on at 200yd. and good to 600yd. useing the ranging in the scope . It works very well .

A friend gave me 500 federal once fired match brass I use for it .

Maybe I will see you at the Range .

KEYBEAR

2100 fps? wow slow for me'
My 168 load is 2,650. Thats pretty decent.
The 150 load is about 2750. Both with 4895 over the screens.
I use neck turned federal match and light up with a fed match primer.
Careful now theres 2 gerrys with a G i'm the old guy LOL
