The Arizona Bench Rest Shooters held a Light Varmint and Heavy Varmint 2-Gun Club Match on November 5-6, 2016. We had a great showing for a local club match with 27 shooters. A big thank you goes out to Lou Murdica for bringing his granddaughter Angelina Gonzalez and to Tom DeBacco for bringing out his son Tony DeBacco. Youth shooters like these two are the future of the shooting sports in general, and we love to see them out at the range.
Thursday’s practice started out a bit worrisome, with winds so high that no one even tried to practice in the afternoon. Weather reports said the wind was reaching up to 25 miles per hour in the area. Fortunately, by Friday morning the wind had cleared up and we had a beautiful weekend at Ben Avery Shooting Facility. Shooters got to enjoy nearly perfect temperatures and a decent amount of wind that was just enough to be a bit of a challenge at times.
Lester Bruno started Saturday morning with a lead in the Light Varmint 100 yard matches with three teen scores in a row, earning him a 0.1792” agg for the gun and yardage. Quite a lead over Bob Brackney’s 0.2524” and Lou Murdica’s 0.2574”. The real highlight of the morning though was Tom and Tony DeBacco going back and forth as they competed between the two of them, with Tom narrowly getting 4th place with a 0.2614”, followed closely by Tony’s 0.2634”.
Shooters enjoyed the sandwiches, sodas, chips and cookies provided by the Arizona Bench Rest Shooters for lunch, then went on to the Heavy varmint 100 yard matches. Saturday afternoon Lester Bruno took another early lead and ended up with 4 teen groups and a 0.1934” agg. Lester was followed by Dana Andrus’s 0.2144” and Larry White’s 0.2300”. This gave Lester quite the lead going into Sunday’s 200 yard matches.
The wind was calm in the morning as Sunday started with the Heavy Varmint 200 yard matches. Bob Brackney took first with some very nice groups and a 0.1708” agg. He was followed by Lester Bruno’s 0.2062” and Larry White’s 0.2153”. As the day progressed, wind picked back up. After lunch, the Light Varmint 200 yard matches were shot. Lou Murdica had his time to shine with a convincing lead at 0.2293” as his agg, followed by Bob Brackney’s 0.2540” and Dana Andrus’s 0.2557”.
At the end of the day, Lester Bruno remained on top for the Light Varmint Grand, with a 0.2228” agg, followed by Lou Murdica’s 0.2433” and Bob Brackney’s 0.2532”. One of our local youth shooters, Tony DeBacco, deserves an honorable recommendation for taking 4th in this grand agg with a 0.2656”. Lester Bruno also took the Heavy Varmint Grand, with a 0.1998” agg. Dana Andrus followed behind with a 0.2219” and Larry White took 3rd with a 0.2226”.
For the 2-Gun, which combined these two grand aggs, Lester Bruno had a convincing lead with a 0.2113” agg. He was followed by bob Brackney’s 0.2401” and Dana Andrus’s 0.2470. In the competition between Tom and Tony DeBacco, Tony came out on top. Tony took 4th place in the 2-Gun with a 0.2666” grand agg. Tony beat not only his dad, but two hall of famers and several other top tier shooters. This also gave him a spot in the top 5 for the Ironman Grand Agg. Great shooting Tony!
Thanks again to everyone who came out this last match. We hope to see you on December 3-4, 2016 for our Unl5-Unl5 Invitational!
