ASHLAND AIR RIFLE RANGE BR match report 11/26/11

It started out a beautiful day in Southern Oregon… but soon changed into a swirling mess of switching, down drafting from the right side winds and up lifting left side gusts from 5 to 20mph. The calm periods were short indeed and one could think it was safe to get a shot off, in a condition one thought would work, only to be surprised with an unwanted 9, 8, or even occasionally a 7 ring shot! Then it would steady out from one direction for a while and you could hold off on the 8 ring for a few Xs, only to be caught holding there in a wind switch and hitting where you were aiming Groans were the norm.. But it was a great day to practice extreme conditions for future important matches.
I talked Allen into testing some of the new pellets I’m trying in my USFT #6 .177 HV gun, while I tested the new lower power 26.5fpe tune on my Open class .22 cal USFT #27. Bob is still trying to find some pellets that work in his new .177 cal barrel on his FT Marauder.. He’s thinking of going back to the .22 cal barrel that was so accurate, but not the best choice field target with some of those tiny kill zones. He has one more .177 barrel to test first though. Between the groans, we smiled a lot, while slurping down some great venison soup I had made. Nothing like getting together with friends no matter what the shooting conditions!
