First, let me apologize for the tardiness of this report. I have a list of excuses that are more prodiqious than The Oozer's good looks; however, I won't bore you with the details. Suffice it to say I am late - SORRY.
On April 2nd and 3rd 28 shooters assembled to contest the final two legs of the Arizona State Benchrest Championship at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix, Arizona. Sporter and Unlimited matches would complete the 4 legs of competition that began in January. Saturday and Sunday temperatures ranged from the 70’s in the morning to the low 90’s in the afternoon. The heat resulted in shooters wearing the very least amount of clothing needed to avoid arrest. The resulting visual landscape was akin to some kind of half-baked NRA nudist colony. Accordingly, no photos will accompany this report. Winds ranged from 7-25 mph; with mirage, dust and other challenging conditions. Switches were tricky and conditions rarely held for more than 2 or 3 shots on the record.
Saturday we shot UL5-100 in the morning. Winning the aggregate with a .2134 was Glen Brace. Glen has not shot for a while; however, there was no rust evident. Second place went to Doc “Mr. Probe” Marsh with a .2140. Third place, with a .2146, went to Ed “Mr. Happy” Maxwell. Small group for UL5-100 was shot by Randy Burgess with a .126 in match #4.
After an epigrammatic lunch break, we shot SP5-100. Winning the SP5-100 aggregate with a .2374 was Art Clegg. While always a tough competitor at 200, amazingly, this is Art’s first win at 100 after years of serious competition – way to go Arthur! Second place went to Chuck Miller with a .2476 and Gene DeLoney shot a .2552 to finish third. Small group for SP5-100 was shot by Chuck Miller with a .125 in match #3.
Sunday we started with SP5-200. Winning the aggregate with a nice .2390 was Gene DeLoney. In second place was Gary “The Oozer” Ocock with a .2403. Chuck Miller rallied for third place with a .2432. Small group for SP5-200 was shot by Gene DeLoney with a very small .303 in match #3 – nice shooting in tough conditions Gene!
After our luncheon retreat, we shot UL5-200. Mr. Probe (Doc Marsh) bested the other shooters and won the yardage with a .2398 in some very arduous conditions. Joe Pipola took 2nd with a .2773 and Jack Snyder came in 3rd with a .3276. In a state of grace (i.e. semi nude), the Clown Prince of Benchrest (Tom Libby III) fired a handsome .329 in match #4 for the UL5-200 small group.
The 2011 Arizona State Sporter Grand Winner is Chuck Miller. Chuck shot a very tidy .2454 to win the grand. Unfortunately, Chuck did not come forward to accept his award. Apparently he never heard Gary call his name – he was too busy yelling “huh” and “what did he say”. The California Kid (Gene DeLoney) was 2nd with a .2471 and The Oozer shot a .2533 to take 3rd. As a side note, Tom Libby is collecting donations to help Chuck Miller buy new batteries for his hearing aides.
The 2011 Arizona State Unlimited Grand Winner is William “Mr. Probe” Marsh. Mr. Probe won the grand in very convincing fashion with a .2265. Roy Damron took 2nd with a .2792. Roy bested every other UL shooter (except Mr. Probe) with his light varmint gun – nice shooting Roy. Joe Piploa was 3rd with a .2851.

POST SCRIPT - Sandy Simon (Don Carter's significant other) clicked her scope the wrong way at the beginning of match #1 of the 200 yard sporter and couldn't get on paper. Don finished his group quickly (he was shooting a nice one), then helped her get on paper. With time running out, Sandy fired 5 shots on the record (no sighters) and had small group for SP match #1 with a .367 – way to go Sandy!
Congratulation to all the winners! Special thanks to Gary and Team Ocock for providing us with another great match!
