If you had to rate John Mccain on a scale of 1 to 10 on his gun policies, where would he stand? I figured the boys from AZ who are benchrest shooters would know about their hometown man's 2nd amendment stance more than anyone. I have heard that he has done some pretty anti-gun things lately. Is this true?

This Sunday's Phoenix paper gave thumbnail sketches of most major candidates' stands on a lot of issues. McCain's new gun control stand is more in line with the Constitution than his stand several years back. A Sunday edition in the Spring of 02 or 04 carried his explanation of his lack of support for free speech and RTKABA as "that's what the majority of my supporters feel". A flip flop for sure but some disappointed in the lack of decent candidates have crowned him the lesser of multiple evils. The current slate has caused some to consider the unthinkable, but understandable- sit this one out. Arizona has about 1.2 million registered Republicans. Wait and see how many vote for him. He will probably get the most votes, not necessarily an approval. His Immigration stand of streamlining citizenship for illegals isn't real popular here, either.

Thank you Mr Cartwright for the info. Sounds like John isn't quite the hometown hero for gun owners.

Anyone else have any news? Can't be just one guy from the land of the sun who follows these things?

In 2004, the NRA gave him a C+. I assume Hill/Bill got a F. He ain't perfect, but now is not the time to sit it out. I am not in love with ANY candidate, but Hill/Bill back in the White House gives me nightmares.

The NRA, of course, had a rough time of McCain-Feingold and that did not win him points. The guy has a infamous temper, but he espouses less BS than most politicians. Since he spend 5+ years in the Hanoi Hilton I tend to give him the benefit of the doubt.

McCain Unpopular

It's been my experience that McCain is generally unpopular (read despised) among the shooting community in Tucson. Some of this stems from the closing of a local shooting range in the late 1990's - Sabino Rod & Gun Club. The club membership assumed McCain would intercede on their behalf with the US Forest Service to keep the range open. It's a very long and complicated story but bottom line, McCain ulitmately turned his back on the membership and the club, which opened in 1952 and served a fairly large and active shooting community, closed forever.

Pima County (Tucson area) and the adjoining Cochise County have enormous budget overruns dealing with illegals. Our health care services are being stretched and bankrupt by illegals. The proposed McCain/Kennedy amnesty legislation was the last straw for most conservatives in Arizona. Unfortunately, it's voters of other persuasions that keep him in Washington. Most of us look forward to the day when he retires to Mexico. Bad news is, he won't have far to travel.
