How is the barrel ext. pin removed from a AR-15 barrel?

i try side cutters, if it does not come out, i grind it down and drill it till it pops loose.

I would guess that the pin is softer than the b/e.I do not want to drill through the barrel by mistake. I will be using a drill press.

i doubt it is softer than the bbl..it is definitely hard, but softer than the bbl extention.
it should spin free before you drill all the way thru...if not is should only be a dimple.
why are you removing the extention if not rechambering ??

Yes, I am going to have it re-chambered and re- crowned locally.Just want to have it ready to "chuck up"for him.He will do the work while I wait and watch.
Thank you for all the expert answers over the past few weeks.

did you but a good bbl extention wrench ?

i have never had one come off easy.

probably in excess of 150 ftlbs and loctite on most.

Brownells the extended one. That is what I use to put new B/E on with. How will this tool help remove the pin? The side cutter idea did not work, had to file it down. With two options drill press or pay the gunsmith to drill it out and pay extra labor. Under normal conditions it would not be a issue.Recently disabled,so I try to do what I can with what I have left.
Do not want to wreck a $500.00 barrel over $25.00 labor charge.

if he is rechambering, he should be cutting some off the breech end, rethread and rechamber...so the potential hole should dissappear in the cutoff.

the threaded section is about 5/8s long...should cut off more than that for a rechamber

I just bring this up in case you do not realize this - the barrel extension pin is just a locating pin and does not hold the barrel extension on, and you can typically remove the barrel extension with the pin in place and re-install the extension on a re-chambered barrel end with no issues (I have done that numerous times).

Thanks, I will try to remove the B/E with the pin in...I guess I will simply shear off the pin? Would be easier if I had a lathe.
Thanks again for the help.

I do not understand your statement/question about shearing off the pin. Why is that even necessary from your perspective? Either there's more to this story or some assumptions being made that may not be correct.

I think he's assuming the pin goes into the barrel steel. I have seen some that were drilled in and pinned through both the tenon and the extension, but by far the majority is just pinned into the extension. The pin may gall the tops of the threads coming out.

I'm still not sure what he wants to do either, as setting the barrel back at all will require shortening the gas tube (or making a new one) and getting the extension indexed properly to the gas port. Unless he's got a new barrel blank and he's re-using the extension???

Used the Brownells B/E tool to remove B/E. Just as easy as explained. Thanks for all the advise and how to.
