I saw a Crankshaft Polisher (loop style belt..hand held) used to polish a stainless steel rifle barrel in a video..just wondering how it works..does it use an abrasive belt or a cork belt with rouge..???

I've been half heartedly looking for one to use on barrels. The dang things are expensive! I have used them on crankshafts several years ago, during a short stint in an automotive machine shop. They used an abrasive belt. I think they'd be perfect for polishing barrels. I'd like to get that operation away from my lathe. That shop also had the polishing stand, that spun the crank while running the actual polisher over the journals.

I think one could use a wood lathe with a 3 jaw chuck and a live center in the tail stock would work to spin the barrel..

it works great

I have a crankshaft polisher from my hot rod days. It works great, but make sure you use plenty of belt grease to keep to belt from loading up.

If you want to see a cool semi-matte swirled finish on a SS barrel, try using a Makita orbital pad sander with a new open grit 220 grit paper. Run the lathe at about 100 rpm, and run the Makita slowly down the barrel, moving the line of contact across the 220 grit as you go, so the barrel gets fresh grit, and run down the barrel in about 10-15 seconds. Gives an interesting almost damascus pattern non-shiny finish. Needs a fairly straight taper to work right.
