Anybody ever try to custom barrel a CZ 452 Action for BR?

Just curious a to why 452 actions aren't used for BR. Are they not comp quality?
 
Bill Pippin has had some fine shooting BR sporters using CZ actions. They shot as well as a sporter could shoot! Of course Bill is also a great sporter shooter. Another friend of mine has a sporter made up using a CZ action, Broughton barrel, and Stith BR sporter stock and it shoots very well. It shoots about as well as any sporter I've ever shot, and I've shot a few of 'em over the years.
Thing is, it's going to cost as much or more to get a custom barrel fitted to a CZ as it does to a Hall or Turbo. Most folks don't want to work with 'em because the barrels are tough to get off, or so I've heard. By the time you get thru building a rifle you will have almost as much in it as you would using a custom action. But, it can be done.
 
Butch may be on the verge of making one; but the lack of a competition trigger has been a good reason to shy away from the CZ's for bench rest.
The Finnfires and Quad Sako's offer a better platform than the CZ,Ruger or other lower priced actions. Paired with a Jewell trigger they are very competitive Even the relatively cheap NS 522 when fit with an Anshutz trigger worked well. Of course the trigger makes a sizeable jump in your investment.

I have a CZ with a Lilja barrel I shoot in IR50/50. There's a Stith stock in my shop. I mod'ed the factory stock while I waited for the Stith and it shoots so well right now that I'm going to wait till this winter to change stocks. Triggers the problem. I've got mine down to 6-7 oz and that works for me because this rifle needs to be held lightly. Doesn't seem to like free recoil. A high buck costom action will cost you a grand. If you don't count the Stith stock that I haven't put on yet I've probably got $1000 in it. It's even managed to win once this year.

I may not be the one to say this but what the heck.

I have a CZ 452 Varmint that I have reworked the trigger until I like it. I have used it for 50/50 until I got a 40X to start working on and I still use it for silhouette shooting.

In my opinion, the best part of the rifle is the barrel. The trigger is a mess and I don't know about the action but it seems to me to be no better or worse than many inexpensive rimfire actions. I like the stock but it is not for benchrest.

In short, the CZ 452 is a great rimfire rifle and a good value but a bench rest rig, it isn't.

Have you ever thought about using a 453 action with the set trigger? Is that allowed in IR 50/50 comps?

Because of the expense of custom receivers overseas, you will see a lot of CZ[Brno} in Australia and other countries using them and doing just as well.

I said that Butch Lambert has been working on a light pull trigger for the CZ

We have been working on a 2oz trigger for the 452 for a while. The first prototype was an excellent 6oz trigger with a very poor bolt release. Our present design may be good to 1oz and have a great bolt release. It takes a long time to go from solid model-prints-prototype and testing.

I have a friend who has been working with a Marlin single shot bolt action with a surplus Shilling barrel and a surplus benchrest stock with quite a bit of success. It may just be that most of the accuracy is in the barrel.

Mike's comments about his CZ not liking free recoil made me think we talk about needing a 2 oz trigger without why.
Most free recoil shooters I believe get their gun pointed where they want it, raise their head and watch the flags and trip the trigger when all is right. Now even with a 2 oz trigger, it is possible to move the gun off where you have it pointed by not having your finger square on the trigger with a strait pull back. The heavier the trigger pull is the harder this becomes. An example is a Martini with a 8 - 10 oz trigger shooting off bags. If you try free recoil, watch the crosshairs and do your best to pull strait back, you will see it is very difficult to keep the gun from moving off the poa. So now you not only have to watch your flags but where the crosshairs are pointed too.
So my opinion is shooting a gun of greater than 2 oz trigger it is difficult to shoot free recoil, which then means bringing in all the problems of holding a gun identically every shot. Watching both flags and crosshairs. Barrel maybe the most important ingredient of a gun, but in my opinion the trigger is very important too. So I would consider a light trigger or availability of a light trigger very important in selecting an action. The CZ 452 is not there yet.
 
the 452 cz gives the most bang for the buck!
my opinion the best out of the box rifle going for around $500, quality of wood and metal should shame american gun makers, and the accuracy is equal to guns costing almost twice the price, the barrel channels sometimes
need reworking just a smidge and the trigger guard looks cheap, it's very tempting to want this gun for competition !!!
your only going to save money in the area of actions.....the cost of other mods needed will be the same as custom....
get all mods done and the resale value won't hold up.
i guess i'm saying "you can't buy a silk purse fer the price of a sows ear"

note to self....square pegs don't make round holes:)
