Any small plane pilots out here...

Amazing!!!

That pilot obviously KNOWS their equipment!!! May never get in it again, but definitely knows how to handle it!

It's a hoax

Yes, this video has been widely circulated and is quite convincing at first glance, but has proven to be a hoax. :rolleyes:

It was done with an RC model and some clever camera work. :p Sure makes a good story though! :D

There's and old aviation term that perfectly describes the conclusion of pulling the wing off an airplane with no altitude and no ejection seat: The Smoking Hole. It usually makes a pretty fire as well.

Non-smoking hole F-15.

Ironically, I received this clip as part of an e-mail this morning. lol
I think IIRC that there was an A-10 that received very heavy battle damage that landed safely. I think it lost 1 engine and most of its tail. I may be wrong on that.

Art;
Have they rewritten the laws of physics?? What holds up the side of the airframe that no longer produces lift?? I agree that an A-10 can soak up a lot of damage but how far will it fly after a wing departs?? Remember the F-117 that shed a wing at an airshow out west??? Where did it go after the pilot punched out??? The term wasn't coined on"You Tube".

Mike, granted in 99.99999 cases gravity will do it's thing. Did you watch the video I posted. A loaded out F-15 has a weight of between 28,000 to 68,000 pounds maxed out. The one in the video that I posted flew on 1 wing. Neather you nor I can change that fact. :)

Hi Art;
That's a pretty high percentage. In a military aircraft especially a fly-by-wire type like the F-15 I find the whole premis a joke. Put yourself in this scenerio:You are sitting on top of an armed ejection seat and a wing just left the airplane. Another wonder of the computer world and it's blessed with no better place to exhibit it than You-Tube. Art, I will go out on a short limb and make the flat statement"This never happened" .It was manufactured.

"Wing?"

Yes, I believe it's phony: check it out on snopes. If this really happened, it would have been all over the news media. Wonder why the "cameraperson" did not keep the plane in focus and walk around to the right side of the plane to show closeup details of the wing having been torn-off the fuselage. 27 yrs. professional pilot, ATR, type-ratings in 4 engine JetStar, Gulfstream, etc. 12500 hrs.

The F-15 Vid is real. And I've seen many of A-10 shot to pieces that still made it back to base. The difference here is the type of plane. A prop plane that loses a wing basically becomes a helicopter and the prop does not and will not have enough surface area to create enough lift per weight ratio to sustain itself. However, a jet (especially combat jets) have a very high thrust to weight ratio. A F-15 can actually pick up speed at a 90 degree angle and not stall. That is the difference. The wide under belly of the plane also creates lift and surface area. With the loss of the small outside wing the percentage of area of lift is not near as drastic as with a aerobatic prop or cessena type planes, that combined with the huge thrust to weight ratio, they can sustain flight and land under high than normal landing speeds. The trick is to keep the plane from barrel rolling which is possible.

P.S. The first video is a fake...

Y'all win. I guess the History Channel lied to us. :rolleyes: :)

Art
The History Channel does have a bad habit of rewriting history to fit Revisionist History demands.

When learning history it is important to look at the facts of history, not the told or written story.
