"Turkey shoot" to raise money for the club?

Many years ago I asked a meat packer if they would help our club by donating something for a "turkey shoot" to raise money for the club. I was told to pick up one of their panel trucks on Saturday morning. The truck had 150 large (10 lb.?) canned hams in it.

WOW, the best "turkey shoot" we ever had since the start of the club. Each competition cost $5 to enter. The winner got a ham. Sometimes 3 people entered and one time 20+ people entered.

Many different kinds of events. Closest to bulls eye (only 1 shot permitted) offhand at 100 yds. was one. The archers loved going up against the pistolaros at 20 yards. They never lost. Another one was smallest 5 shot group at 100 yds shooting off a very loose legged table. Another was how many shot gun pellets was put in a playing card at 40 yards. 3 was a lot until a father & son got 27 in one card standing next to each other.

I guess I am rambling on, but we ALL had a lot of fun and most of us went home with a ham and the club made a lot of money.

Oh yeah, I remember those days

We called it a "meat shoot". I'd head out with my black powder rifle for the match with Cheryl standing on the porch waving me on with encouragement. Then when I pulled back into drive, there she'd be, asking what are we eating tonight? Hotdogs or steak?
It's such a primitive part of life, I'm surprised more ranges don't try it as an incentive.

We still have several each year in my area.

Usually 5-8 shooters throw in $5.00 and shoot for a turkey. The cost for a ham is $3.00.

About any type of contest you can get enough to sign up for.

one shot closest to center
rifle
pistol
22's for the kids
most clubs, 4-H's community center's also have trap for the shotgunners and card games are held inside.

Always great lunches with "homemade" pies always a great time even if you aren't a big winner.
