Anschutz MPR 64 Tunner/Barrell Question

Hi folks,

I have a Hoehn tuner that I'm looking to relocate from an Annie 64 Sporter to my 64 MPR. Unfortunately it'll need to be re-cut for it to fit properly and was wondering whether any of you kind folks wouldn't mind measuring your 64 MPR about 1" from the barrel to provide the correct dimensions.

Also, for those that are using a tuner on their SS 64MPR, what weight sets are you using to get it to function properly? I hate to order all 3 sets (3, 5, 9oz) when I'll wind up only using one or two of them. Not sure whether every rifle is different or not, but wanted to get a sense of which weights to order in advance. I would imagine that this being a heavy barrel, at least the 5 and/or 9oz weights would be a good starting point.

Lastly, has anyone bedded the action of their 64 MPR and if so, what were the results? Many thanks in advance!

P.S. I'm planning on sending this to Harrell's precision for re-cutting who apparently makes the Hoehn tuner's now

I purchased a tuner from Mr. Hoehn about this time last year for my blued barrel 64 MPR. The muzzle diameter on my rifle is .944 at the end, as well as 1" back.

Did you have them cut the tuner for .945 then? I'm not sure exactly what 'overage' I need to have built-in to allow it to slip over the barrel. I would imagine you want as tight a tolerance as possible but given my newness to tuners, don't/can't afford to make a mistake! :)

Also, what weights did you wind up with? I would imagine with the heavier barrels that they're going to need more weight for them to work properly.

Nope, I requested .944. He may have bored it larger, but it fit perfect when it arrived. I think you a can be a thousandths or two large and still be fine.

Remember, mine is a blued barrel. I have no idea if the SS 64's have the same barrel profile. I have a cheapie set of digital calipers that worked great to measure mine. For piece of mind, you might want to consider buying a set.

I also bought the 3 weight set (3,5,7oz) from Mr. Hoehn to use with the Annie. It's been a while since I shot it, but I seem to recall it liking 10oz. and a tuner setting in the upper 300 range.

Kurly,

You can buy the weights if you want but you can go to the auto parts store and get some of the adhesive lead tape they use to balance the mag wheels and use that to figure out what kind of weight you need then once determinced order the weights you want. Regarding the barrel, if you are going to order the tuner from him just tell him what the barrel diamater is and let him worry about how big to bore the tuner. He has done a ton of these and will get it right.

Good Luck
Charlie

Thanks for the reply and feedback on the dimensions -- I've got a buddy that has calipers so I'm going over today to measure it just to make sure. I'm going to order all 3 weight sets just in case. I figure with shipping it's almost pointless just to order two of 'em.

OOC, did you find that the Hoehn tuner made much of a difference, especially since it's a heavy barrell??

Good idea. The tuner came with those auto-parts lead weight sets already installed on them so I may just peel them off and try them again. I'm probably going to go ahead and order all 3 anyway and not go cheap.

Yes, definitely. In the words of those I shoot with "it really made the rifle come alive". Granted, I spent a lot of time they didn't know about testing and tuning.

Pardon my acronym deficiency, but what does "OOC" stand for?

Great feedback -- I've sent the tuner to Harrell's Precision for re-cutting and new weights. I'll try it with 10 oz installed to see if that's a good starting point (which I am curious, how does one even know which weight set to begin with? -- seems like you could go through several bricks testing out which weights to use let alone which tuner settings it likes best ).

OOC -- Out of curiosity. Sorry, the Internet's already full of acronyms, ain't it! :)

Ordinary Calipers would only give you a lucky chance of getting the right size. You need to measure your barrel with a Micrometer Caliper.
Why would anyone start with a 10 OZ weight or for that matter ever use that much??
Start without any weights and see how it works.

I rec'd the Hoehn tuner back from Harrell's Precision today. Fits great on the end of the barrel. Thanks to all who helped out with measurements.

But, I also ordered the 3 set of weights (3oz, 5oz, 7oz). Seems that only one of them even remotely matches the color/finish of the Hoehn tuner. I'd like to get them at least somewhat similar looking -- for those that have the Hoehn weights, do they match the tuner?? The two that don't match look almost grey instead of black. I'm thinking about sending them back and seeing if he has any that look 'finished' instead of what look like were only partially finished. Any comments as to this??

I believe that's the way they come. Mine never matched either.

The tuner and 3oz weight are aluminum. The 5oz and 7oz weights are steel.

I think it has something to do with the different metals taking the "coloring" differently.

The ones I got from Harrell's are pretty beat up (many scratches and dings in them) yet they were packaged well. I called Harrell's and he said they have another shop make the weights for them and were likely not handled properly. He said I could send them back for replacement, but was wondering whether I could just refinish these by sanding them down, re-bluing and/or paint them with something else.

Has anyone tried doing this and would a re-bluing solution make them more like the tuner itself? Would simply using some wet/dry 600 sandpaper do the trick or some steel wool?

I know the tuner's made out of aluminum so I can't make it look exactly like the steel weights but would like something to look at least somewhat similar to the tuner. Many thanks for everyone's help!
