I managed to get a couple of hours late this afternoon to take my Anschutz Match 64 to the range for the first time. I have never had an Annie before, and have never shot iron sights like the rear aperture front globe/insert. It took a lot less to get used to it than I thought it would.
When this rifle came in the rear sight was removed and packed seperately. I installed it but hadn't shot it until now. I was surprised. The first round hit low in the bullseye at 25 yards. I fired about 10 rounds for group size without adjusting the sight. I ended up with a ragged hole less than a half inch diameter. I adjusted the elevation and put a ragged hole in the center of the X. I was using a club target that has a white 2" bullseye surrounded by a dark grey and then a light grey ring out to the 8 ring. I then moved the target to 50 yards and stapled up an old NRA replacement center I had in my bag. I was really surprised. I started shooting and adjusting the sight until I had the rounds in the X-ring. Then I put a half inch ragged hole, 25 rounds, in the center of the bullseye.
I tried several different brands of ammo I have on hand and got the big surprise. The really good groups came from some old CMP/DCM white box ammo made by Olin. I think Winchester made it for junior rifle team's practice. I tried some Eley Sport, Aguilla, Wolf Match and RWS Rifle Target. None shot nearly as well as the CMP stuff, and that has to be at least 25 years old.
I can't wait to try it with my scope when it comes in, but I have decided that I have a new favorite rifle.
