Anschuts Will they hang??

I have attended a couple local club rimfire matches and i think it really looks like fun. Most of the guys shoot full custom riggs but there was one fella with a Anschutz rifle. Well at least a stock and action. Anyway I may think about buying a rifle so i can play. I am looking at some of the basic model bench rifles from Anschutz. They are running about 1100 bucks. My questions is, will this rifle, with all else being equal shoot well enough against the full custom rifles? Or at least well enough to not finish at the bottom of the list? Basically what i need to know is if this type of rifle will be ok for a first rifle? I would assume i can always have it rebarreled if i think it isnt shooting well enough. I am sorry i dont remember the exact model of rifle i was looking at. To many numbers and letters to keep them all straight. Basic 3" forearm wood stock 22LR/ Thanks Lee

First you need to know the action model; not necessarily the configuration. If it's a 54, it may hang as it is; if not, with a little work you can probably make it competitive. At $1100 I would say it's a 54. But if it's a 64, leave it alone. They're good rifles for certain applications, but not for BR. Another thing you might want to know is what type of trigger and whether or not it's properly bedded or bedded at all.

the rifle in question is a 64 S BR 20" barrel. Whats up with the 64 actions compared to the 54?? Please advise. Thanks Lee

I guess the easy answer is 54's shoot better and you can generally get a better trigger. They are a larger, more stiffer action and I assume the lugs are better as well. Anschutz "advanced" to the 2013 for a time as it's premier action, which was essentially a flat bottom 54. Right now its Olympic class rifle is the 1913, which is a 54 Super Match. There is little difference is a 54 Super Match and an older wing safety 54. They shoot about the same.

$1100 for a 64 when you can buy a 54 for about the same. It's the biggest no brainer in the history of earth. Seriously, I sold a 64 for around $600 about six to eight months ago.

I shoot a standard 1913 in a 2213 stock. And it shoots real good.I don't have a flat 3" foreend but solved it with a sliding plate attached to the rail.

As suggested go for a 54 if you want to compete. For fun get a 64.That shoots good too but defenitly not as good as a 54.

Will an Anschutz shoot with or as good as a custom? With maybe be a few exceptions, the answer is no. Why else would all the better shooters be shooting customs. There are often customs for sale in the $1500 to $1600 range in the classified section. Many people have taken an anschutz 54 action and re-barreled it with a custom barrel and they are competitive with a benchrest stock.
The best advice, I think, is buy the best you can afford the first time. I like many others started with an Anschutz 1710 D HB, then a 54 supermatch with set trigger and ended up with a Turbo action, Jewell trigger and Lilja barrel. I still have the first Turbo, with it's third barrel. My score improved with each up grade. I also owned a win.52D and Rem. 40X actioned customs.
The barrel and it's condition is the big factor in how well a gun can shoot. The person pulling the trigger is the big factor in the benchrest game as they control tuning of the gun, shooting the existing conditions and ammo being used to shoot at a match.
others may not agree with me, so do what you think is best for yourself.

Skeet, I take a little different slant to your question. If you just want to get your feet wet & shoot club matches, the rifle you are considering should do pretty well if it's fairly new & tight, just don't plan on upgrading it to anything more than it is now. Don't know about the price, Champion Shooters might be a good resource on that. The above replies to your question are a little more idealistic point of view, and aimed at getting into registered competition in the future. If that is where you are headed, by all means save up a little more money & buy one of the really nice custom rigs that pops up constantly here & there. Good luck

Thanks fellas. I suffer from the Need It now syndrome sometimes. I wasnt sure about the anschutz, but i thought i would ask. I also have been looking at the Copper bench rifle. I have my name on a list at stiller for one of there 25x rimfire actions. I really like the stiller action and i just need to be patient. The actions will not be ready until late this year, and that sucks!! If i wait on the stiller i will not get to play at all this year. I like fine rifles and i work hard for nice things, so maybe i will just hold tight and stick my cash back deep somewhere and wait on the stiller. I ordered a right bolt left feed 25x action from stiller and i think it will be pretty sweet! I dont really think the left feed has much of an advantage in rimfire but i have always wanted one. pretty cool offering. I just wish they could start making them!!! Anyway, thanks guys for your insight. I really appreciate your time!! Lee

I disagree with you about the R/L action setup for RF. It's even more important to be able to put those soft, straight little bullets precisely in the chamber. I love my Hall compared to the 40X & Suhl I had several years ago. I've read on this forum that there are a couple of actions that you can confidently just drop a round on the ramp & close the bolt, but most need a little help.

64sbr

stock is not like a real br stock, the real br stock that annie makes is much better than the 64sbr,

buy a used 54 br build or buy a cooper trp3 (then sell it once you get the stiller)

the cooper is way better than the sbr
AND YES I HAVE BOTH the coopers (2 in wood) are quite nice and shoot with a jard trigger, one finished quite high in the psl match last month ??

the stiller is the one to wait for, or get a hall or a turbo built and away you go,

have fun

I am also on the stiller list for number 22 (.22 get it) through robertson composites (and yes try the new JTR br stock (that is me) ) stocked by advertisers on this site, try the psl site for more info I think

Why is the Stiller the one to wait for? No offense to Stiller but I don't think he touts it as anything other than a 40X clone and I've never heard or seen in writing where he makes it sound like the next great BR action. Not taking anything away from a 40X, they've certainly proved their mettle, but any good gunsmith can square one up and get it ready to shoot. Overall, the Stiller would probably be cheaper than buying a 40X and having it worked on, but it's still a 40X.

I would go with Hall or Turbo.

40x is one of the top 22 Bench rest action's ...(look at any EQ list) so if stiiler has a clone 40x no need for truing/blue printing thats the way to go ! many full inlett stock's and triggers out there to chose from.

will a factory 54 Anshultz hang at the club level YES..and maybe beat a custom if your REAL lucky....THIS I KNOW :D

40x's do show up in the winner's circle occasionally. Considering the number out there compared to Turbo's, I would say the Turbo is a more proven winner. I just don't really understand what Stiller has done that improves anything. I will say it's probably cheaper than buying a stock 40X and then customizing, and I think that was the goal. And I'll probably buy one.
