Another powder question

I was wondering if anyone shooting in short range bench rest was using WW ball powder. A couple of the long range guys down under use it in 300WSM and the like but no one seems to use them in the short. Any body know anyone who is using it with any good results.

Andy I dont know anyone using it however, I gave it a lot of thought a few years ago with the motivation of having something that would meter more consistently in my thrower.
I asked around and the only answer that was really given was that it burned out barrels a lot faster. True or not I dont know. I did have some blc-2 in a drawer so I tried just one group with it and it was not a bad group. But as we all know one group cant tell us much.

There seems to be a bit of confusion there about barrel burn out. According to Winchesters info the ball powders have a lower flame temperature and will burn out a barrel more slowly. So I was thinking if you combine that with the fact that ball powders have a higher loading density, meaning a case fuller with powder plus better metering then perhaps it should be tried. But if those powders have a proven track record of not shooting well in BR then that might be the only reason shooters don't seem to be using it.

Ball Powder

Andy, years ago I had one Shilen barrel that would shoot WW 748 in PPC. I think the load was 25.4 gr, but check a loading manual first. Never got it to shoot in other barrels.

They are not a great choice but they will do the job. From what i have seen years ago in the 222 ww 748 BR was
really a good powder at 26 grs. The problem was fouling that we cured with 7.62 ball powder solvent.
I not sure about the newer ball powders but the old ones did make a mess of the barrel if you din't take care of it properly.
