I've got two turning centers here and off/on over the years I've kicked around the idea of whipping up some solid bullets just to fart around.

Material selection has me kinda stumped though.

Brass?
Bronze?

What alloy specifically I guess is my big question.

Thoughts?

well just off of the top of my head i would try some 353 brass it's forms well and is easy to machine. i dont know if it's the best choice but it might be worth giving a try. hope this help and keep us posted with how this go's.

I'd try Bronze first, and look for a fairly soft alloy.

Kirksite Zinc alloy is also available as rod stock. Its been used in casting bullets but if cast in a mold once used for lead or otherwise contaminated with lead, the bullets begin to crumble under pressure later on.

The Military used to use Zinc alloy bullets to test armor plate, due to the similar penetration characteristics to FMJ Ball, but more consistent results.

PS
I wonder if an acid wash would leave a micro pitted surface that would hold dry lubes to reduce friction and fouling.
