Ammo testing

It's been a few years since I sat at bench and tried to put some small groups on target downrange. I have several centerfire rifles that are better than half moa capable.
Enter 22 benchrest. A chance conversation got me interested and I ordered some Tenex from Dan Killough. Today, the weather allowed me to take the Kimber 82Gs out. Yes, thats plural. The person who started all this mentioned that the CMP had some "rusty" 82Gs for $400 and I had to have one to go with the first one I bought years ago.
I got on paper with ammo from the CMP, but groups were half inch or larger at 50 yards. I had trouble with one scope and cased the rifle. I battled a thick reticle and rusty bench technique and managed to get some groups with the Tenex. The biggest group was .709, second largest was .553. I also fired a group measuring .162 and one at .256 before running out of time. All groups were 5 shots. This may become addictive. I think the rifle is capable of quarter inch groups, but I have to get better first.
I also noticed that I could see the bullets strike the target on several shots.
Just to confirm the innate perversity of the universe, the small groups were fired with two different lot numbers.

slimchance, off all the ammo shot from my kimber 1065 speed eley team shot the best. there are now several 82g's at our club, I have yet to see one that shot slow that being below 1060 as well as ammo at 1065 up thru 1085. of the three 82g's all have been bedded , trigger pivot redrilled and 2oz triggers, free floated and the hand stop rail reversed to ride the bags better. all have bkl rings and target grade scopes. even in cold weather, that being below 45 degrees they shot 1085 eley club ammo very good. even with the 2oz trigger and hand rail change these rifles need to be held somewhat.

HMMM,
Interesting. I need to go back and look at the velocity for my lot numbers. It also looks like i'm gonna order more ammo. I wish somebody would make a trigger for these rifles.

check out rimfire central, on the kimber forum there is a sticky at the top titled 2oz trigger. moving the pivot will allow you to go under 2oz if desired.

2 ounces safely? Can't remember who it was on this forum that said all the time.....you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, but it's pertinent on this one.

John, 2 ounces is what I said and 2 ounces is what I meant safely. you have no idea how accurate these 82g's and factory 40x's can be because, untill this year no one and that includes you knew how a barrel really vibrates.

You guys may be able to help me out on the same topic. How do you test your ammo? I was told recently to take my tuner off the rifle. The lot that shot best with the tuner off would be the best with the tuner on my rifle. Is this true. If true it would save a lot of ammo and time than trying to tune the gun with each lot. What's the best way to test ammo?

Big Shurl, have never tested ammo and never will. Dan Killough and Gene Davis can confirm this, I just order anywhere from 20 boxes to a case and never once tested.

Martin, don't you think it would be a good idea to put a disclaimer in all your posts that you have not been at this very long and these are just your oppinions from limited experience?

not me Don, but if your curious ask Dan or Gene. these Penn State kids really are going on to be rocket scientist. of all the emails Kate White has returned there has only been one not answered. these kids have microscopes that look at the microstucture of metal. not me Don but them, they have determined the primary difference between eley team, match and tenex is the quality and consistancy of lube, furthermore if a round pushes more in the wind than another it is a result of a lube problem. eley was given this information a year ago with specific lots and info, that is the only email they never answered and it seems odd to us you no longer can get team. Don I might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer but I'm smart enough to listen to smart people. and further Don they have determined that .060 difference or aggresively polishing the crown on a rifle can make that rifle switch the preferred speed. oldwives way of doing things die hard but 30 years from now what you or slick willy think you know about rifles and bench shooting will be a blip in the history of bench accuracy.

Ask Martin when is this winter is going to let up! He and Phil have to be related, they both know so much!

slick willy right now I'm working on multiple rifles to tune, when I'm done they won't care wether it's 45 degrees or 95 degrees. people think not guns although some rifles may have higher Iq's than the nut behind them.

Blip

I don't know if you were referring to me when you said ask Gene but since you brought me into this I have one question to ask. When are you going to start shooting in sanctioned matches to prove all these things that you keep spouting off about? Take all your factory guns that you have super tuned and any ammo that you want to shoot and beat the crap out of all these custom guns that are not tuned according to you. When you start doing this maybe someone will start listening to your bullsh$t.
Given our ages, most of us will be a blip in history 30 years from now.

Big Shurl, you need to determine the tolerance of your rifle before putting a tuner on. all rifles can be made to shoot slower ammo by putting a tuner on, all rifles cannot be made to accurately shoot fast ammo by putting a tuner on.

when your tuner is off, zero your scope with slow speed ammo. install your tuner without any weights. if the shot goes high you can tune to multiple speeds from slow to high. if after installing the tuner the shots are neutral or below the bull you are limited to slow ammo or finding a lighter tuner and hope it's light enough.
