air movement

I have never been to a airgun benchrest competition. What I would like to know is, do the competitors in a top level competition use anything to detect air movement in a indoor range?

Its been my experience that no air/wind indicators are used at AGBR Indoor matches with one exception... (see below)...

At outdoor matches, yes, very much the same windflag gear is used as for .22 rimfire benchrest matches.

The one exception mentioned above was at an AGBR indoor match last spring that I shot in at which the folks running the match set up 8 helium filled balloons about 3 1/2 ft. above the floor, two in each of the four lanes being used of the seven lanes total in this building.

As I recall, there was no motion indicated at all in the ballons during the match, they simply held their strings they were tied to weights with straight up and down for the duration of the match.

As I recall, there had been some discussion of the possibility air currents on this particular indoor range previously in other matches. This range is located in New England and during the cold winter months has a gas furnace for heat and I believe this experiment with the ballons may have been conducted to determine what effect shutting off the heat was before starting a match.

It was done only the one time that I know of and as stated previously would seem to have little to no benefit during the match as compared to shooting AGBR outdoors with windflags...

Happy Shooting,
Mitch & Shadow...

This is the third time I submitted a reply and the forum didn't take it. Thanks for sharing your experience with me, I appreciate it. I'm wondering if the bouyancy of the grounded helium balloons is as sensitive to change in atmospheric condtions as running a fishing line the length of the range and tying air filled balloons to the string hanging them down. I also use incense sticks and follow the smoke trail. There's alot of temperature changes that affect a room when a group of people are there. I even notice a 3-4 degree change in my bedroom from body heat when I stay there for awhile. Maybe insignificant things, but splitting hairs and thousandth of a inch is what benchrest is about.
thanks again , ifldned
