I've been working on that Savage 112 and stuck a 6.5x284 Norma barrel on it. So far so good, it's been shooting .6-.7's. Nothing to brag about yet, but still doing some break in and starting to develop work up loads.
I noticed when I reassembled the barreled action, there seems to be a little stress in it. Without the action screws, you can rock the action up and down near the front action screw. Similiar to it not having enough space under the new recoil lug, and toggling on it. I measured every thing I could think of and I'm sure there is enough clearance under the lug. There is a definate difference in how the action sits in the stock depending on whether I tighten the front screw vs the rear screw. The action gets torqued down when the front screw is tightened first. The new lug is a little thicker and I realize that the barrel nut position has moved toward the muzzle slightly, but even there it looks like there is enough clearance although the nut does touch the stock lightly.
I'm going to start planning to bed the action but could use some advice.
If I do a full action bedding, including the recoil lug, how do I keep the barrel nut free of the bedding but still bed the lug?
It has a fairly heavy varmint contour on it so I was thinking of bedding 1-2" of the barrel ahead of the barrel nut, does this sound like a good idea?
I've heard to keep the rear tang free floated, any good advice on how to do this?
Thanks again you guys. I know this is super basic stuff for a lot of you but I am a newbie to a lot of this. Bryan
