Adjusting for wind

When compensating for wind, when shooting at 50 yards, do you adjust the whole rifle or do you adjust using the windage knob on the scope? I'm just now beginning to realize just how much the wind can effect the group pattern and any info would be appreciated.

from my very limited experiance, i have used hold off a lot

. . . small hold-offs:

I agree with Al Hadfield . . .

Watch the flags before your relay goes on the line. Determine what condition occurs most often . . . Spend time on the sigher bulls and get that condition zeroed in. Then, as Al sez: "use very small hold-offs".

Thanks, I appreciate your response and help.

Your Welcome Ken.

Shooting in the wind, especially windy-wind can be humbling. One thing that has not been mentioned much is Memory, one has to Remember where all those flags were when you nailed that ten. Hell, there are days I don't remember what I had for breakfast! :D

wind

well i shot in st. louis sat the most miserable day of shooting i ever had. there was 20 mph wind changing from all directions and swirling wind and uplifts and downlifts.

joe beshe ate it up of course. as for me anymore days like that and im staying home it was humbling to say the least.

after watching brian brandt he does not take the adjustment covers off he just move his rifle to accomadate for wind and its changes. this is where you almost need a pappas rest or something like it in order to do all the moving around of the rifle.

the pappas does give you a memory to work from which is valuable. i havent purchased wind flags yet and it wouldnt have mattered sat what a terrible day.

hope this helps in some small way

Bob,

Don't forget the old saying, "a great Sailor is not made by calm seas".

Its easy to get frustrated in those times.

Hey, I don't want to change the direction of this thread but would you send me a PM of a rundown of St. Louis, how averyone shot?

Thanks Bob,

Charlie

what do you do when the wind is constantly moving? what do you do when the constant wind you are zeroed for disappears and doesn't come back? i leave mine zeroed and simply hold off for the wind. it works for me.

I've seen a few people dial in the wind and be have success but it's very few. I can't do it with any consistency, so I generally hold off in small amounts and keep the rifle zeroed. However, I believe there is mental barrier to hold off and it varies by person. I have a problem holding past the 25 ring on an ARA target. It's just a mental block. In that case I may choose to dial in some, but I know where my zero is in case something changes. And dialing in has gotten me in trouble. What you really want is 25 in the same condition. It's probably there if you can wait on it or beat the change. Most of the better shooters seem to be really fast or really slow.

the wind

the pappas rest will hold after the shot exactly where you shot the time before from that you can make whatever adjustments you need to make.

so if you shoot to the center and you are off you can use where your rest held and move the 2 controls according to bullet placement.
