Any differnce between quality or strenght of the $52.00 action wrench that Midway sells by Wheeler or the one Brownell's sells for $150.00?:) Thanks

You need to specify the moddels..

Both companies sell several different wrenches and barrel vices. Brownells generally sells other manufactures products. In most cases their prices are a little higher. Midway generally knocks off others and manufactures under their house brand names. Usually you are not comparing apples to apples. That is not to say one product is better than the other.

action wrench?

Brownell's is on page 408 of their #61 catalog. Midway's is by Wheeler Engineering on page 30 of the October flyer. Thank's again:)

As Nat said, Wheeler is a Midway house brand. What type of barrels are you going to remove?? If it's anything other than a Benchrest barrel you run the risk of going through a few before you get one that will do the job. Some(most) factory barrels are a handful to remove especially those that are installed with some type of thread locker. Not will you only need an action wrench you will also need a very good vise with a barrel locking system in it. If you don't get a good hold on the barrel it will turn in the vise and be chewed up by the vise. It's actually a (2) part system and it's hard to use one without the other.

I found the wheeler action wrench for 700's and Mausers works well. I found their barrel vise to be poor, as mentioned above, for factory actions.

So, I built my own with T6061 inserts. I also made some inserts from a piece of Asian hardwood ?? that work as well as the aluminum, and do not galvanize it if it slips.

I have also built action wrenches for people, Mauser type, years ago, before I started gunsmithing and it's not a difficult shop project if you have a mill.

For really stubborn stuff, I eat the barrel, and back up the action wrech with a pipe wrench.

Get the Wheeler set and save yourself money. Use powdered sugar for the wood blocks in the barrel vise. I haven't found one yet that I can't remove.Old mausers,Browning a-bolts and win m70's. Ain't damaged any actions yet either:D

Wheeler Action Wrench

I have both as well as a rear entry wrench from Darryl Holland. I use the Midway to remove factory Remington Barrels. I have different tops for the Brownells for Winchester, Mauser, M-1 & M-1A, etc. The rear entry wrench is fine for replacement barrels which have not been torqued as tight as factory.

Cut some thin brass shim stock to line your Midway wrench and you can keep the actions looking like new.
