Action Torque

I would like some opinions regarding torque settings on action screws in rifles that are pillar bedded.

Does varying the torque setting of the action screws influence the accuracy of the rifle or since the action is fully supported does it make little, if any, difference?

If you feel the answer is yes, then what impact does it have (i.e. group shape, size, etc.)?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, often, all of the above. You test and see, Most seem to live between 25in. lbs and 35 in. lbs.

Tim is right on for a wood stock. If you want to utilize very tight action screws then you can get this if you have pillars. With aluminum pillars you can take the torque about 50% higher. If you have steel pillars then you can go about 2X to 3X higher. Higher torque would probably offer an advantage from standpoint of accuracy but I think you could only get it with pillars.

Tim gave you specs for stocks with pillars, steel or aluminum. Stocks of wood, composite, carbon . Tim shoots BR, talks to lots of guys, had a few smiths build him BR guns. Cecil does not shoot BR, talks to self, reads books. Start with the 25-35 range, if it does'nt work call Cecil...prepare for extended therapy, your choice. Sorry for confusion.

Anschutz actions are easy to strip the threads if you use too much torque. Go easy and be careful.

Hey Tim....

How you been? I sure am sorry I said you were right on! I guess you must feel you were wrong - but hey, I still think you were right!
To 1813 benny.... You can believe Tim, even if he doesn't think he's right. He's a super BR shooter. If he said 25/35 in-lb, you can take it to the bank, BR shooters don't lie and they know what they're talking about! Now if you should want to try a higher torque for some reason, just don't pay any attention to me when I say it would be desirable to have aluminum or steel support under the screw head and four or five threads in engagement That's just something I got out of a book and it's probably wrong. Tim can tell you why it's wrong since he is a top notch BR shooter, and he talks to a lot of other top notch shooters.

God bless you there Cec. What happened, the grandkids did'nt visit the home, they moved your pills again? Pillars....most of these BR guns have pillars. The guy asked about a stock with pillars....we know Cec...pillars, I got it. That was what the answer was for and you'd know that if you were ever within 50 feet of a BR gun.
