Action question for 6mm Rem Ackley Imp

I am currently gathering components to build me a 6mm Rem Ackley, and was curious as to opinions on what lengths action to use. I currently have a short and long action Rem 700 I could use. I know the 6mm is based on the 7x57 which is kind of mid length, and I realize that the short action would be better accuracy wise, but not sure if I would run into feeding or OAL problems when loading certain bullets. All opinions would be appreciated. ~Jackson

For the shorter bullets, 75's etc. the short would be fine. For the 105-107's a short may be too short. The worst that could happen is you would have to remove the bolt to remove a loaded round.

That was what I was afraid of. This will mainly be a hunting/varmint rig, and I would really prefer to be able to cycle a loaded round. I will be using the 100grain bullets at times as well. So looks like I might need to use the long action. Thanks ~Jackson

There are two ways to approach this. The short action magazine will not work well, as is because it's on the short side. The long action, while it works is a little to long. I do a conversion where I extend the magazine cut out in the action and install a longer mag box. I'm getting ready to do a 6.5X55 on a titanium 700 for myself.

Dave, If you don't mind me asking. Where do you get your longer magazine box? Can you buy a longer box or will one have to be fabricated? Just how much longer will it need to be? I would prefer to use the short action as I have just finished truing it , and I have other plans for the long action. I've considered just using a benchrest follower, and using as a single shot, but would prefer to have a functioning magazine. Any advice you could share is certainly appreciated! ~Jackson

I altered a short action to work with 100 grain bullets but I would never bother to do another one... use a long action and no alteration required and it will work fine. I don't see any benefit to using a short action at all... I even built my 7mm-08 on a long action...

I go with Dennis

too much work for not gaining anything.

You can get it from Brownells. They stock extended boxes from Kevin Wyatt. Don't get the center feed box. All you have to do is mill out about half the center screw hole, extend the line of the rails on back, shorten the bolt stop and if it's a BDL floor plate notch the bottom rear of the box to fit over the floor plate latch. It's a lot easier than it sounds. Takes about 45 minutes, but then I've done a few.
