i have a savage 111 30-06 long action and i am looking at hart and shilen barrels i do not have a prefrance of either. just wondering which is better for the price also what twist rate should i go with if i shoot 150 grain. or what should i shoot if i want the most accuracy i do not see any problem with 150 grain. just would like to shoot further and more accurate. right now with a stock savage, the only thing that i have done to it is i personaly brought the trigger down below a pound, and with that i shoot 1 1/2 in groups at 200yrds with store bought ammo. at 100yrds i put the shoots on top of each other every time. what can i do to bring this out to about 400-500 yrds

If your rifle shoots as well as it does with factory ammo, you may have little to gain from a barrel change. It could be that the money would be better spent on other things, like getting set up to reload, and/or an upgraded bag/rest setup. You also might learn a thing a thing or two by attending a benchrest match. They are held at the Visalia range on a regular basis. Hall of Fame members and world record holders compete there on a regular basis.

savage

i have no idea what a bag is. and right now i have ordered a choate stock and a rest set up i think you mean a bipod of some sort yes i do have one because i love to prone shoot

I mistakenly assumed that you were shooting off of a bench, with some sort of front rest (with a sand bag mounted on it) and a rear sandbag. As it turns out I was wrong. By bag I meant sand bag. I have some experience with the stock that you have ordered, and did not find it to be a good choice for shooting from a rest and bags for a couple of reasons (that may not apply to prone bipod shooting). What I said about reloading still applies. Except for some of the tactical shooters, (and rimfire of course) no one that I am aware of competes using factory loads. If you would like to learn about reloading, I may be able to give you some help, given that we live in the same town. Another thing that has a major effect on accuracy is having some way to see what the wind is doing, wind flags, or at least sticks with some sort of streamers attached. What scope are you using?

yes

yes i am very interested in reloading but i have no idea where to start. i went to mayfield guns and ask them what scope that they had there would be good for my gun and they straight up said any of these and right off the bat i knew that was a lie but i still bought into it and i bought a konus 6-24 X44 it seems to be ok but i have only shot my gun about 6 times and i seem to do very well

If you want an easy project, Pac Nor, Shilen, Lothar walther, and a bunch more will offer you prechambered and prethreaded barrels. When handloads, there is little reason why you can't get at least 1/2 min accuracy at 400 to 500yds.

I have been using pac nor pipes in 223. 1st pipe was their CM match and it was ok - 1/2 min. My newest is a SS Super match and it shoots extremely well with Bergers 80gr.

The 80gr Amax shoots 1/4 min at 200yds if I can judge the winds.

The Bergers gave me my best 3rd group ever at 200yds - 0.058". Other test groups shows that the pipe has the potential to shoot in the 1's. Not bad for a varmint rifle.

I have also done the conventional install using Kreiger, Gaillard and Shilen. All shot very well.

Personally, if you are getting sub MOA at 200yds, just crank in another 8mins or so, and get out to 500yds. You already have a very nice setup for general plinking.

Bedding the action will pay huge dividends to consistency and reducing your group size.

If you are smart you will take up Boyds' offer to help. He can help you to avoid a lot of costly learning mistakes.

go with the shilen

I am just completing a BVSS112 switch barrel from 223 to 6.5X47. All we had to do was buy another bolt head assembly. We ordered the heaviest contour barrel Shilen would make in a 30 inch, 1/8 twist and it fit beautifully into the factory stock with a little more bedding. I have not added the pillars yet just want to see how it shoots. The thing was dream to headspce. 30:06 would probably want 1 1:10 twist amd a twenty six inch pipe for 150 grainers. I shoot 150gr corelocks over 49 gr of Imr 4895 and its a half incher. Shilen people are great to deal with and they will even help you with advice.
good luck

Aftermarket barrels for Savages

It has been my experience you get what you pay for. It will be hard to beat a Broughton, Krieger, Bartlein, RockCreek, or Lilja. They require fitting and chambering by a qualified smith. They are custom fit to the particular action and not a generic. One mans trash is anothers treasure. I like the winners from the get go.

I don't remember his name, but there was a fellow on here that told me about a project where he rechambered a savage barrel from 243 to 6br.
