Accuracy vs Velocity.

Hi,
Just a couple quick questions.
I read somewere that a 22 Rimfire attains it's maximum velocity about 18"long barrel.
I have read also the length of a barrel does not effect accuracy. If this is true why have a barrel longer than 18" on a SCOPED rifle?
Thanks

Not always true

I had a 29 inch barrel that produced a velocity higher than the same ammo did in a shorter 24 inch barrel.

Fred,
So between your 29 inch barrel and the 24 inch barrel which one had the best consistent accuracy?

Best results

I've always had my best results with barrels in the 25.5 to 28 in range. I've had a few 30 inch barrels that were outstanding at 100 yards, but they didn't serve me well at 50 yards. Every barrel is different, so you just have to do a lot of test to find that magic lot. I don't pay alot of attention to velocity if the lot shoots well, regardless of barrel length.

Why not 18"?...

Cause benchrest is shot with rifles, not carbines!

Gee I thought a Carbine was a rifle, at least that's what we called them in the service.
