A small problem

I'm in the process of chambering a barrel and have lost the C-clip that holds the pilot on the reamer----no spares and this is the only reamer I have that uses a clip.

I'm going to predrill and taper bore before reaming.

What are my chances of keeping the reamer on line without the removable pilot ?

BTW, I set up the barrel by indicating the throat and muzzle per Jackie's method and its running at or very near dead nuts. The tenion is cut---no counterbore or threads yet----and the setup still runs true.

I don't want to throw away all this work and time and can put things on hold until another clip is found.

Will appreciate advice.

Is this a flat section E clip or a wire ring ? You may get by with a tiny rubber oring. You could also try making one out of music wire from a hobby shop.

An excellent chance ... but it would also be very easy to make a temporary clip as stated earlier ...

Crb----

I think you're right about the clip. It is a flat piece and I think, of the E shape.
The C-clip was just a slip of the keyboard.

I'm going to try to get one locally but chances are slim, especially on Saturday.

I do have an assortment of O-rings and maybe I can find a substitute.

Thanks for the reply.

As you are feeding the reamer inward there should be no force on the bushing's retainer. When you remove the reamer from the bbl there will be a little tension on it. I have some TINY orings left over from my motorcycle mechanicing days is the only reason I though of them.

Alan, I'll bet you could wrap a few wraps of thread or fishing line around that area in front of the pilot where the clip fits and it would keep it in place when you withdraw the reamer. Wouldn't take much. Good luck.

If you are going to predrill and bore the taper, then why would you need the bushing. Alot of guys on here don't use a piloted reamer because they predrill and bore. If the barrel is true and the chamber is prebored, the the finish reamer will follow the same path..

If you happen to make bullets, the lead wire bleed off from squirting cores works well for keeping the bushing on with the reamers that use retainer clips.

Mr. Lucky Shooter, would you possibly believe, that if you have and know how to use a lathe and a needle file you can make a perfect clip.

As to using or not using the pilot bushing, it was put there for a reason. As to bushing size, use the next 0.0001" smaller that does not bind when inserted in the chamber end with a cleaning rod jag.

Thanks for the replies

Folks here are never short of ideas.

I'm going to look at the string and bread loaf tie. I've found a way with #22 steel wire but it is a bit difficult to get it on and off.

I'm not going to proceed without the pilot bushing.

Parts store

Most parts stores as well as bearing suppliers and Hardware stores, have assortments of the clips you discribed.
