....Chicken before the egg, Big Bang v.s. Divine Creation, Hillary - Obama - or the other guy,...all questions that have troubled man as long as we can remeber...Equally as frustraiting, 7mm or 300 wsm.....?

Nuts and bolts: I have a Rem 700 Long action (from a 7-mag) that I am going to get rechambered and rebarreled thru my favorite, PAC-NOR, to one of the above mentioned. I will be shooting either 180grain Barnes TSX in the 300 or 160 TSX in the 7mm.

I plan on using this for long range pig punching, 600 to 1000 yards.

PLEASE help me decide. I know it is a personal choice, but it is keeping me up at nights. I can;t decide...so like in November, I am lettgin it go to the masses.

Any suggestions?

Jim

7mm...higher BC bullets available, more wind resistance, flatter trajectory.

Looking at my ballistics chart... the 300 wsm carries more velocity and energy across the board, especially in a 165 pill.
The only time the 7mm RM ever catches or pass the 300 is @ 500 yards. Even at 500 yards it looks as if the Remington only carries another 75lbs of energy.

300 WSM: 165 BTSP/ Velocity:3130 2910 2690 2480 2290 2100 Energy: 3590 3090 2650 2250 1915 1615 Drop: +1.3 -6.1 -17.9 -36.4

7mm Mag: 165 BTSP/ Velocity: 2950 2800 2650 2510 2370 2230 Energy: 3190 2865 2570 2300 2050 1825 Drop: +1.5 -6.4 -18.4 -36.6

I own both guns, I would rather shoot the 300 wsm over the 7mm any day.

Note: This is for factory ammo not hand loads.

300wsm

I have a friend who owns a safari business. He runs non stop for 2 months in and around Namibia. He is also a hunting consultant in Colorado and spends weeks at a time in the western slope area of Colorado. He has killed every species of plains game in Africa. Moose, Bear, Elk Muledeer and Pronghorn in Colorado. He loads a 180 grain Nosler partition. Last time I talked to him he has killed over 900 animals with this rifle, in 300 WSM. Most of his kills are to anchor animals wounded by his clients or for bait etc. I have a 7mm Rem Mag and have had bullet failures on deer with Nosler 160 grain bullets. I have used 175 bullets also but can't get the velocity where I'd like. We can talk BC all we want but when you compare similar designs, the bullets are so close they are still in the vitals out to 600. If you plan to shoot animals, you cant beat the 30 caliber with a 7mm. I don't mean to say the 7mm won't kill, but I just seem to have cleaner kills with the various 30 calibers overall.

The replies above discuss the 7 Rem. Mag., not the 7 Wsm. The difference between those two is not significant to some.
I don't know what kinds of pigs you're intending to punch, but whatever they are, I'd not use the TSX at ranges of 600 - 1000 yds. Too tough a bullet. Chucks or porkers I'd consider the 7mm Berger 180 VLD or something like it. BC will make a difference at the ranges you intend. The 210 Berger in .308 will work well too, and the long action will let you load your bullets to a "better" OAL.

Why a WSM in a long action? I would rather have the 7mmRM. Way more than you need for deer or pigs, but what the heck? If not the 7mmRM, then I would go with the .30-338.

BTW, if you don't know who you are going to vote for in Nov. just give up your guns now. That is what the democRATs want.:D

I usually vote in line with NRA endorsements. Like you guys, I really take the 2nd Amendment seriously.

300

300 all the way. Ballistics are too close to call. Bullet selection is slightly in favor of the 300 especially if you have any other 30 cal guns and want to shoot bullets over 160 grains. If you want to shoot over 190gr, go with the 30-06.

I carried a 300 Win Mag for 25 years and never had to shoot anything twice. My 7mm remington is a perpetual two shot to kill gun. I can't explain it. But there it is. I have two 7mm, but I went out and got another 300 Win Mag.

For punching paper the 7WSM is my choice; that is what I'm shooting currently. :)

300

go with the 300 a lot flatter shot but the 7 mag has less kick so you decide but i would go with the 300

chad

What bullet are you running out of the 300 WSM that shoots flatter then the 7wsm? At what speed?

Dont know if this matters to you, but if you have a supply of either 30 cal bullets and not 7mm bullets, or vice versa, I would stick with the one you have a supply of bullets on hand for. Just cheaper in the long run as it will save some cost on load development and you dont have to start stocking another caliber.
