7mm RUM reamer

I know that the 7mm RUM is a relatively inefficient cartridge, a barrel burner and finicky to load but I want to play with one so here's my problem.

The reamer I have (JGS) cuts a chamber with an enomous amount of freebore. Even with the longest bullets available (aka Berger 180 grs.) the bullets can't be seated to touch the lands. When seated 0.250" in the case (which I consider minimal), the bullet jump is over 0.200". Are there quality reamers availble for this caliber without this amount of freebore? Any suggestions? Quality is important as I want to use this rig for long range hunting and shooting.

Thanks

Eddy

Send it back to JGS with a dummy round, bullet of choice seated to the depth you want and have the throat shortened so that the bullet touches the lands. They do it all the time. No big deal.

Eddy: Check out my response to your original posting on the 6mmBR web site, almost a carbon copy of Dave's. Dave: We think alike.:)

A 7 RUM cartridge choice presumes you are looking for the highest velocity you can get. Be aware that a short(er) throat will significantly reduce max charge and attainable velocity. With a short throat you will not be able to reach published loads before pressure shuts you down. In a hunting rig like yours the reduction in velocity in pursuit of greater precision might not be the best compromise. On the other hand, you can always lengthen a throat with a hand reamer (about $40) yourself but you can't make one shorter. I went through this myself with a 338 Imperial mag (similar to a 300/338 RUM) and got happy with velocity when the throat was quite long and still offered very good hunting accuracy. Everything is a compromise and you get to make your own. Cool, huh.

Tx guys, I think I'll contact either JGS or PTG for a new one with a shorter throat so I'll have both
