I picked up a 40X USMC .22 rifle at the CMP last week. It is my understanding that it is based on the 722 action. Will an after market trigger like a Shilen made for a 700 action fit?

Yes. The safety lever spacing is a bit different between the early and late 40'x receivers but the basic trigger is the same.

Thanks Ray. I have read that the standard trigger can go as light as 6-8 oz. True?

Completely untrue. With the standard spring you probably can't get it safely below 3 lbs.

I had a 722 that had its trigger worked over to considerably below that, and it was safe. If I remember correctly the 722 trigger spring is different from a 700, slightly smaller wire diameter, not as tightly wound. I will agree that to get anywhere near that low a different design is needed. One thing that I found when fitting a light trigger to mine was that because of the much lighter striker spring, a Shilen 2 oz. would not work, but a Canjar Light Pull did, not requiring as much force to override the top lever. Of course a Jewel would have, but I wanted to use what I had. BTW. for those who want a light trigger, but not too light, the Canjar adjusts from 2-12 0z. Unfortunately they are no longer made.

700 series triggers can usually be worked a bit and then adjusted to safe crisp weights sometimes as low as 16 ounces... usually not much below 1.5 pounds... I would be very careful with any under a pound...

On another forum a guy told of a source for light springs for use in Rem 700 triggers. Cut apart a tire valve core !!!!!

I have had good luck with the Basic Triggers. Good for the $.

Completely untrue. With the standard spring you probably can't get it safely below 3 lbs.
I've tried to work these trigger system and there is alot to be desired with them as I've got them down to 2lbs and that's it. The double safety bar or sear release is two piece, and one is used for sear engagement and the other one's for the safety catch or a back up for the safety from what I can tell (stamped sheet metal piece's). I would change it to the better type for BR shooting, just my 2 cent's, YBRF Rambo

I've fit shilen 2oz triggers to 3 cmp 40x's with no problem. The bolt release may need some work. On my own 40x, I used a Sinclair bolt stop.
Regards,
Ron
