722 extractor issues

One of my F /Tr rifles is built on a Rem. 722. I've been working on heavy bullet load development, and have been pushing pressures pretty hard. The last range trip, the rifle stopped extracting some of the time. When I checked the bolt face, the extractor is still there, but the ejector looks slightly peaned, and I'm thinking that if it is peaned, it might not sit quite flush w/ the bolt face, thereby spacing the base of the case off the face just enough to make the extractor not get a possitive bite ont he rim. Does this make sense?

I realize extractors are a touchy business w/ the 722. I actually expected mine to be gone when I checked, but it's still there. Maybe my best bet is to remove the ejector, fill the hole, and install a sako extractor?

I guess the other option is to order a new oversized bolt from PTG and have it fit to the action, but I'm wondering about cost/benifit between the two options. The rifle shoots much better than it has any right to.

Another option is to replace the extractor. I just went thru this with my 722. . I found a new replacement extractor for the small bolt face on Gunbroker for $18 and $3 shipping. Seemed like a reasonable amount. Many on this forum are very adverse to the Sako conversion. Personally I like the looks of the 722 bolt.

Thanks, I hadn't even tried sourcing a 722 extractor, having been told it's futile. I guess I should beat the bushes a bit before giving up.

A 'smith friend has proposed to install a 700 extractor. He says he's never done it, but thinks he can use a 700 bolt to index the rivet hole and make the conversion to the standard 700. Anybody know if this can be done?

i have seen a couple of 700 extractors in the 722 bolt face,i think the 700 extractor may be a little high to fit the raceway, but you may be able to very carefully file it down to fit the raceway?
what size bolt face are you needing as the .378(222 size)? are still around, the hard ones to find are the .473 size.I have a spare .473 size,i had to give $40 for it,but i'd sell it,also have a 700 bolt ,old one without the anti bind slot that i bought in case i couldn't find an extractor, either one will work, would sell the bolt if it's the right bolt face.

it's the .308 size I need. I'd rather go with replacing the extractor, since the bolt I have is shoots really well, and I'd rather not have to refit a new bolt if I can avoid it.

Let me know if you are serious about selling.

I'd be more concerned with the groove than modifying the 700 extractor to fit. The groove is basically eccentric on the 700 and I'm sure its longer on the 722, perhaps it goes all the way around. If the groove goes all around, the case will slip over into that groove and likely fall off the extractor lip after the case leaves the chamber. Good extraction but no ejection.

Hi Rob-

I got loking at the existing extractor last night, and it looks like a short piece has broken off the end of the extractor, allowing it to rotate in the bolt face. It still grabs the rim, just no guarantee where the lip will be on the bolthead when it grabs... I think I've found an actual 722 extractor anyway- will let you know.

I am not a gunsmith by any means but if the 722 is like the 721 with the groove completely around the inside of the bolt head. 30 year ago I drilled a hole in a 721 bolt like a 700 on a 300 H&H and installed a 700 extractor and it is still working fine today. This rifle has always been used a lot and has caused no problems. Kenny
