700 XCR in .308 good gun?

im considering getting a remington LTR in .308 for some bench shooting. i hear its a pretty accurate weapon right out of the factory but im wondering if ill be able to reach out to 600-1000 with it having a 20" barrel and all. anyone here know anything good or bad about them?

the FT/R is too long and very ugly for my liking and im also looking for a more utilitarian type of gun. right now im working on getting my paws on an XCR compact in .308. if i can do 3 inch groups at 500 with it ill be happy. and from what ive read on them it looks very possible even with the 20" barrel

3" grps

If you can shoot 3" 5 shot groups at 500 yards with that I will eat it.

hahaha i may hold you to that, but you'd have to buy me a new one. im betting the 20" barrel on my XCR compact is more rigid than most. and ive heard they do 1/2" hundred yard groupings on a regular basis. so a 3" at 500 with hand loads should be possible...i hope atleast

There have been some posts recently by people having some issues with the throat length in the Rem .308s, myself included. My is cut way beyond the top Sammi spec and that pretty much limits you to the larger, heavier bullets because of the seating depth. I'm still wrestling with what to do with mine. I think if I were to do it over, I'd probably go with the Savage.. You might want to do a little research before you plunk down hard earned $$$ for a gun that might or might not shoot 1.5" groups at 100 yards..

is yours a police or tactical rifle? ive heard that they do cut them long in the police/tactical rifles for insurance against the 5.56 naturally. but i cant say ive heard of anyone having serious issues with it as of yet.

i intend to use heavy VLD bullets in it. so i should be okay unless the throats are WAY long which they may be.

yours shoots 1.5" groups at 100 yards? i would've gotten rid of the thing. thats terrible for almost any rifle over 400 bucks

I bought one of the SPS Tactical models in .308 Winchester with the 20 inch barrel and the Hogue stock last year just to tinker with. The first trip to the range with four different loads of RL15 and 168 Sierra BTHP gave me five shot groups of .4xx, .6xx, .5xx, and .4xx. I was tickled with the rifle but didn't have time to spend with the rifle before hunting season and intend to get a competition bullet seater this year and try some other bullets. The only factory ammo I had was the Hornady 165 Light Magnum. I was impressed when the only group of 5 shots I fired at 200 yards was 0.61". Don't sell the short factory barrels short. If nothing else it will make a dandy compact hunting rifle.

700 sps

I have a Rem 700 SPS in .308 W/ choate free-floating stock. extreemly accurate. dont waste your bread.

I've had a couple of Rem PSS's and I'd say the best I got out of them was ~.75 groups at a hunnerd and a consistant 5(+/-)" at 500+ (but not much time tweaking loads). Was shooting 168's over IMR 4895. So all-in-all I'd say they're 1 moa guns. Which is exactly what they built to be. BTW both were trued and bedded. Now, occasionally I'd get some smokin' groups but I am speaking consistent.

well i went and picked the XCR in .308 up on sat. gun looks to be in great shape only problem is the front base screw in snapped of flush with the action. i think im going to throw her in the bridgeport and bore them all out to 8-40
