Hello all,

I have no experience with this caliber at all but a buddy of mine just picked up a very well kept Winchester model 70 with what appears to be a 26 inch heavy barrel. He looked up the serial number and it apparently was built in the custom shop in 1977 is I am told. He paid 550.00 for it in a pawn shop with 300 rounds, dies, 100 brand new cases and 70+/- bullets of some sort. it came with some sort of older scope on it that had a target dot reticle.

He wants to try and use it for long range coyote hunting and asked me if I could help him dig up some loads for it and I know that a lot of you fellas on here are very knowledgeable of this caliber.

For long-range coyote hunting and target shooting, what would be some suggestions as far as "go to" powder/bullet/primer combos?

Thanks for the help,

Jamie

I'll send you off the loads I use in my 6-284s tommorrow. I'm running short on time this A.M........ P.S what twist does he have? Which brass Win., Lapua, Horn, Norma? Also recieved some Win LP primers yesterday if you need some. Roger T.

Hey Roger,

I have no idea what twist or brass he has? I can get that info tho I think. I think I am good for now on Win primers but if you come accross and Rem or Fed primers I will take some of your hands. I want to have some of everything on hand brand-wise.

Take it easy,

Jamie

80 gr. Berger with a stout dose of 4831 will do the job but don't count on saving any hides.

Sierra...........

80 "Blitz" or 85BTHP, Rem 91/2 or Win LR, start about 4-5 gr. under top loads after establishing seating depth and work up 1/2gr. at a time till it starts to group, then go finer. Or, start w/the ladder method, whichever you feel most comfy with. :)

Must find out Rifling twist !

I shoot that "Bad boy" cartridge. Every gun is different. EVERY GUN ! 5th Edition of Sierra manual has listed loads. My rifle has a 26"Hart 10"twist BBL. That barrel prefers H4350 and Re#19 with bullets from 70gr to 90 gr. Sierra's listed max charge is a grain under my starting charge.I can push 70 gr Nosler BT at 3,900+ and 87gr Hornady V-Maxs at 3,600. Take your time. That cartridge is a screamer.
