6ppc bullet idea and or question

Sometimes you find that an idea has already been tried (and failed), so I figured it best to ask first.
In the past there was a lot of hype about 22ppc being great but the sporter class killing the use by many or most.

Question has anyone ever tried using a super light weight 6mm bullet pushing the velocities way up there so that it falls between 22 and 6 ppc.
I got the idea when I saw some old custom bullets in 50+gr weight class on a shelf from an estate sale.

Has anyone ever tried this?
I think they were 58 or 59 gr.

I've always been able to push light 6MM's faster than 22's for weight. A 50gr 6mm will go as fast as a 45gr 22 IME

It has been tried, and basically it was determined by actual test, that the gain in velocity does not overcome the difference in BC to create an advantage in wind drift. Currently, there is some experimenting going on that you may find out about next year, that relates to the use of light 6mm bullets for short range benchrest. Keep an eye out. If it works out, it should be interesting. A little heavier than the range that you mentioned, I have some 62 grain (.750 jacket) Watsons that are quite good in one of my barrels.

Recently, I put all the 133 that I could fit behind a 55 grain Ballistic Tip, and ran it over a chronograph. With my .060 freebore there was quite a jump, and the velocity was right up there especially considering the short barrel. Accuracy was pretty decent too. Previously, I would have thought that over the hill benchrest barrels were too short to be useful for varmint work at longer ranges. This test proved me wrong.

I tested and shot a lot of 58's and Boyd is right....they will beat the heavier bullet in wind drift---to a point. Calm to breezy, give me the light bullet. When it turns to a blow, you need to have enough heavier loads to test on the sighter and finish the group.
That advantage is not as pronounced at 200 yards, and goes away at 300.
I like the 58,myself.

Thanks everyone. And Bryan thanks for the test results. It was actually about what I expected.
Next question on this is (while I just got off of a 14 hour shift and cant remember the twist of my std 6ppc barrel) will the std twist of a ppc work ok with the lighter 58gr bullets you listed int the test?
