Will a 6mm Rem. work as a repeater in a Rem. 700 short action? I saw the overall length of the 6mm to be 2.825". Thanks, Don

The 6mm is factory chambered in the SA Rem. The trouble is if you use the longer VLD style bullets you need to set them deep into the case to use the factory length mag well.If you use a single shot adaptor you can seat the bullets out as needed. Which defeats the purpose of the repeater you want. If you stay with 87gr. bullets and lighter you should have no issues using the magazine. a12 twist would be a good choice with the lighter bullets

As a repeater it does not work well on a short action 700 ... it is much better built on a long action.

Short actions can be altered considerably but most of the bottom lug is ground away much like .375 H & H's on 98's.

Go long action and never have a worry about length...

ditto on what dennis said,,,,,,,,,,,,,, hell my 6mm Rem bullets are set out so far I have to use a 30-06/270 bullet box to hold loaded 85gr and 100gr rounds... same go's for my 6.5 x 284 (it's built on a LA 700)

the wind is my friend,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

6MM is better......

in a receiver that will allow you to seat out to at least 3" OAL; as for the 12" twist, I must respectfully disagree. I had a 700 Varmint Special, & wanted a 40XB, so, listening to all the gunrag writers, I ordered the 40X w/a 12 twist, & sold the VS(w/a 9 twist) to a shooting buddy for what I'd paid for it, & gave him all the load data. We both shot the 85BTHP Sierra. The 40X shot beautiful groups at 1 & 200 yds; but no matter which of us shot the VS on any given day, the VS outshot the 40X at 300 & beyond, not by much, 1/4" or so, give or take, but that always rankled me. Another comparison of that rifle, was when I moved back home I had a few occasions to shoot with another friend at some hillside pastures where the .22-250(another 40X) would, by the 1-thousand-one, 1-thousand-two method, plunk down a bullet at the count of 4. I know that isn't so precise, but we were shooting grounhogs, not doing a science project. Anyway, the '250 was wearing a 12" twist, too. At that range I had my buddy aim where I told him, he came within 12-14" of a groundhog out there, would have been a good shot w/just a smidge more elevation; but the 12" 6 in the other 40X was minute of house!! There was just no rhyme or reason to where the bullets went.....one was callable, the other wasn't, & the 6MM had far fewer rounds through it than the '250!! Just my experience w/the 12" in a 6MM,.....never again.

parent cartridge

the parent cartridge for the 6mm remmy is the 8X57mauser and the 7X57mauser. i agree with dennis, use a long action so you dont limit yourself to shooting long nosed bullets single shot. Fred

Why would anyone want to limit themselves with a short action when the standard action will give you all you will ever want for bullet room. As to a twist rate, I think you would want to pick the twist rate after you decide the length range of bullets you want to shoot.:D

There is no wrong answer sofar. Don didn't give much info to go on other than would a 6mm Rem work in a S/A , The 12 twist on my original 722 works just fine with the lighter bullets (90gr. or less). Don needs to specify what he wants to use it for and bullet style/weight range intended

I agree, personally I've found no joy in the 6mm Remmy or 243AI with fast twist barrels and VLD or long bullets. Just too much powder and I end up with a lower pressure load to get good ES......then the barrel is a mess to clean...too much powder burning at lower pressures. The BR based cartridges are much better IMHO with fast twist barrels and high BC bullets. The 6mm really shines on coyotes with 70-90 grain bullets, factory Remington 10 twist barrels will shoot 95 to 105 grain deer bullets just fine through a 700 short action or a 788 but I'm past recommending 6mm's for big whitetails when so many other calibers will do it even better.

Nothing wrong with a long action, if you are buying one they can be found for less $'s and are more versatile but if you are in to mid-range field shooting a have short action, it will work fine.

6mmrem

I have one built on both long and short action rem with the short. loaded rounds with 95's or 105's are not real easy to get out and forget about the mag.
