6mm Norma br or 6mmxc?

I finally ordered a Brux 6mm 1-8" twist #17 heavy varmint contour 31" S/S barrel that will finish at 30". Should have it in 5 weeks. I also ordered the Savage 12 Target duel port action.

Which caliber should I chamber it in? 6mm Norma br or 6mmxc?

Plan on shooting 100, 200 + 600 yards. Mostly 100 + 200.

Haven't been able to find any Lapua brass in either cal. Only 6mmxc Norma brass.

Which one should I go with? :confused:

This is getting hard. I keep getting the old flip a coin as an answer. Is the 6mm br that much more accurate than the 6xc to make a difference? I do like the idea of more velocity, but I like better accuracy more.

Is barrel longevity much different between the two calibers?

split the difference and go with 6BRX, loads with 6BR dies, shoulder moved forward .1...you'll like it.

It will be a cold day in hell before you find Lapua made 6XC brass right now - because as of today, they don't make it.

While the 6mm BR Norma cartridge is a fine one, the advantages of the XC and similar cases (mostly feeding from magazines, but accuracy is just as good) mean that most 300 meter target shooters are starting to change calibers. Biggest down side to the larger cartridges is shorter barrel life - about 50 to 60% of the life of a 6BR.

Speaking of 300 meter position shooting, Lapua's 6.5x47mm cartridge has yet to win a championship - something rifles in 6XC have done at least twice.
 
You might want to consider the 6mm/.22-250 Ackley Improved.
Sinclair catalogs the die sets in-stock, just takes a necked up .22-250 case, and being Ackley Improved you can likely get competitive performance while you form your cases. The case is about .001" longer than the XC with a 40deg shoulder. Standard .472 bolt face too.

Get great accuracy and barrel life, when the barrel goes, ream it to .243win or 6mm/.284 and see if that extra .15" of new throat puts you back in the X ring.

I am using a Redding .22-250AI FL S die with .264 bushing, 6mm sizing rod and a Forster 6xc die body in a medium micrometer comp die. Very satisfactory to my tastes

I came to this AI in a backdoor way, as I shoot this round in an AR-10 highpower upper that was 6mm/.22-250 originally. Well, due to the taper of the stock case, could only seat 6rds in the magazine. I reamed the chamber to AI using a .22-250 AI reamer I had and as throat and neck dimensions are unchanged it has worked fine.

Yes,there are more out there. Each of the above have their advantages and disadvantages.

If you are shooting 600 yds or less i would go with the 6mm BR hands down. If I were shooting 600-1000 I would go with the 6mmBRX.

I use 6br/95vlds for varmint hunting out to ~600
and 6xc/105vlds for 1kyd target

I know people use 105s in 6br, but I don't think my barrel would do well so slow.

My next will be 6dasher

I am shooting more and more. At one range the distance is out to 300 yards and the other which has the comps is out to 1000 yards. The comps are 600-1000. I love the thought of the 6.5 x 284 for the shoots out to 1,000. As everyone has told me and from what I have read off this site. The 6.5 x 284 has a barrel life of approx 1500-2000 rds before change outs... the 6 br has long barrel life but is not the preferred 1000 yard gun and the 6.5 Creedmoor... well I don't find much on. The .260 is easy for reloading but again is not what everyone is shooting. What is the XC and how does it all fit. I would go with the 6.5/284 but the barrel life... not that it is the end of the world but current practice shooting would burn out a barrel each year! I want my cake and ice cream to. Something that is easy to reload... has brass/ bullets available..I have 2 jobs now... and don't need another. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. GT also looking/ wondering why you are going down those road of calibers?
 
Here is my .02 on your question.

6.5x284 - king of 1K shooting but you need deep pockets for bbls. 1200 rds average bbl life.

6.5x08 or improved versions - Very good performance at 1K with 142s, almost equal to the above in velocity and much better bbl life. Recoil close to the 6.5x284 - 2000+ rds.

6XC with 115 DTACS or Bergers - a close second with much better bbl life, low recoil. Should get a bit over 2K rounds.

6BR or improved versions - No recoil, excellent accuracy and long bbl life. You need to learn to read the wind better than the above in order to shoot good scores. Probably the best for 600 yds and under. Low reloading costs, excellent accuracy, and long bbl life 3500 rds.

No miracle calibers. 6br,6brcxdxallxx's made from 6br brass. Fireform while you practice,practice,practice. Won't be your last gun or barrel. Addicting.
