6mm for 4895

I hope I don't go here. But some of you have programs that can calculate the right powder for a given case capacity, right? How about the other way?

What size case would be right for 100% loading density of H-4895, pushing, oh, say, a 66-grain 6mm bullet to around 3,300 fps, with pressure around 65,000 psi?

I don't have such software but from experience somewhere around the 6mm-250 Savage, 6mm Remington International or 6mm HLS are in the neighborhood velocity wise. Or maybe a 6BRX? (never had one of those) Do you want 65,000 psi or do you figure that's what it takes? I'm not clear on that.

Charles, according to QuickLOAD 3 a 6mm Dasher with 24" barrel, 0.225 seating depth and 34.2g H4895 will give you 3326fps. This is based on their data for 41 grain h2o full case capacity. But this is at 44Kpsi pressure.

I don't see how you are going to get 65Kpsi and 100% LD with a 66g bullet at 3300fps with H4895???

In my limited use of 4895, I have always found it to be a wonderful powder. Not fussy at all.

So the notion was, could one build a short-range competition rifle by selecting the powder first . . . Adapt the chambering to the powder, rather than the other way. But it seems 4895 is just too slow, I don't trust single-base powders used in the 45,000 psi region.

Also, as a fallback, I've swapped VV N-550 for 4895, and they're about the same. Always nice to have a double-based powder available. But of course, you're right, N-550 is (probably) too slow for optimum use with a 66 grain bullet, regardless of case size.

What powder(s) do you use in your modified PPC, Jerry?

Charles, the 4985 I have is several jugs labled IMR4895 I got from Wideners as a surplus and it appears to be some faster than the H4895 and IMR 4895 I have tested it against.

This batch of 4895 works well in a 6PPC with 66-68 grain bullets but it makes a very slow load. Saying that, I'd like to say that in the last 2-3 years I have found 6PPC accuracy to be more in the 3150-3275 fps range as opposed to some of the current V133 @ 3450-3500 range.

As to my cartridges, the 6-40 Dune that I shoot at 600 yards will also shoot this 4895 well with a 90g Berger BT and the 88g Berger LD. Here again, slow. Wonder why all the guys that go up to the 6X-etc's then limit them to about 2950??

In my 6-40 Tyger, 3/4 grains less than a PPC, will not shoot this powder fast enough to make holes all the way through the target paper!! But, it shoots it very accurate at about 3025 fps. (Remember the 1970's articles when guys like Geza Nagy was shooting T/GI-etc 322 at speeds as slow as 2925 and shooting well. Doesn't that frost the ?&%#@& of the one-match-per-batch crowd)

All I know about it is H4895 seems to works well in a modified 6BR case.
